I thought if you had the latest service pack on 2014 you would be able to read 2015 files. Is this so?
No, I don't think it will. SolidWorks is not forward compatible.
That ability was suspended for that one year. Please Jody Stiles reply below from Will solidworks 2016 files work with 2015? .
I thought that was one of the things they added in 2014. I just tried it with a 2015 file & no it won't open the 2015 file in 2014. I remember trying this in one of the versions that it was supposed to be able to do as long as you had SP5 & thought it was for 2014. It never worked then when I tried it as far as bringing in any useable geometry. It would put a single feature in the tree but there was nothing in the graphics area to see. Your best bet is going to be parasolids or step from 2015 & open it in 2014 that way.
The ability to read SW2015 SP0 files using SW2014 SP5 was disallowed for that year. I think it was due to some changes made to the file structures that allowed the file sizes to decrease.
