I've been working on this assembly and everything was fine, then i added a part and from then on i could only select a few limited (usually the largest faces) or nothing at all! Any one have any idea why this could be? Very frustrating as I have a deadline due for uni very soon!

if you want to share files use "file->pack and go" when you in the assembly.
As you attach only the assembly file to referenced parts will load to the assembly.

Are your limitations due to being a student version? (Just wondering, I have no idea what the specific differences are from my SW, but I don't have any issues selecting any parts in Assem1.)

Is the surface a hole put in with the hole wizard or was it created as a revolved cut? Also check your resolution in performance, image. Run it as high as you can without crashing. Usually around 80% of the scale.

My guess would be a graphics card issue. See #13 at Frequently Asked Forum Questions for more information. Unless you can select them, but they don't highlight when you hover on them. In that case see #6 at the same place.
And by the way, we can't open your Assembly without the Parts.
