Reverse engineering warped parts

Here's an example scan of a warped part. This part is sheet metal, but it could be another material.

My procedure has been to cut up the scan and rotate the sections so they are more or less flat, so I have a more consistent reference for modeling in SolidWorks. This is time consuming, and most likely introduces some inaccuracy.

My next step would be to look at some poly modeling software that would let me pull or unbend the scan back to what it should be, without distorting the features.

Is there a better method or additional software that can modify the scan so its a better reference?
