Transparency Slow

Does anyone have any hints to improve the preformance of SW when object transparency is used? I have recently moved from a different platform (yes I'm a newbie here) where I commonly left most solid objects transparent for ease of seeing edges, points, etc. thoughout the part. This worked very well and was very useful. When I try to do the same in SW the performance hit is enormous. I have the same object in both apps and in the old one it makes no difference to performance at all, in SW it is basically unusable.
Are there any tricks to make this work better? If not I believe some attention from development is needed since other apps handle this quite well with no performance hit.
