Color all components vs color part

When I create a configuration with a design table, the main function is to show a painted part or weldment (as an assembly). When using the $COLOR callout for parts, it works fine: each configuration has a different color based on the colorref shown in the $COLOR column. However, when I try to apply this same principle to an assembly file, it doesn't propogate in the same manner. After I create the configuration and set the color in the DT, I have to select the entire assembly and apply the color via RMB Component Properties>Color>Use Assembly method. I would think that this would be automatic that the components would use the color of the configuration, rather than having to take this extra step. Is there a setting that I am missing in the SW options, or something like that? Any input is appreciated.
