BOM from ASSY file??

Is it possible to generate a BOM (or parts list) directly from an assembly?

I like to generate a top level BOM to use for ordering parts for prototype builds. The only way I have found is to place a BOM table on a top level drawing, and export to Excel. But the indenting causing sorting problems since it uses spaces. I am looking for something similar to how Pro/E exports a text file directly from the assy.

Are there any suggestions on a best practice for this function?

  Two MINOR questions:
  1. Level 0 doesn't list the part number
  2. Is there a way to capitalize on the "do not display children" state of sub-assys that you don't want to detail?

I am not an api programmer.
But I think you must edit the macro. Let`s wait from an expert programmer answer this question. Or maybe Mr. Lenny.....

Andy,

In SW09, you can export assembly & multibody BOMs directly from the model environment, no need for a drawing. The file is then exportable to a wide variety of formats, such as; Excel, DXF, DWG, PDF and more.

If you are always following the same steps to retrieve specific data about the model to generate a report, create a SolidWorks macro to retrieve this data and create a simple report. This ensures consistency in how the data is retrieved and reports are created. See my AssemblyBOM macro.

I believe the macro is gone. Or I just can't find it.

I need a macro or other type of program that will run via Task Scheduler or other means and will extract, identify and save BOM's from drawings or assemblies in a selected directory.
