Okay, I don't really care why, I just want to work at least mostly crash-free.
SWX will die if I try to Hide Body in a drawing. Sometimes. Or when I right-click on something. Sometimes.
Is there nothing that can be done to write a stable program? I'd really rather work than re-boot or re-start stupidworks.
I've been dealing with the same thing for almost a full year now. Everyone who uses SolidWorks regularly in my company has been dealing with this issue. 2014 was not nearly this unstable (only a crash every once in a while, and it could usually be traced to a specific series of steps, and could be worked around)
2015, all service packs (currently on SP4), crashes much more frequently (sometimes many times per day), in completely random ways. We have never been able to trace it to any repeatable specific series of steps.
The randomness is really very troubling. There are times when it will crash every 5 minutes for a period of hours. Then it will stop and and we can work for several hours with no crashes. It doesn't matter how any times we restart the computer, or change settings, or shut down background processes, etc. It just keeps crashing when it wants to.
It does not matter what we are doing. It crashes when rotating a part. When scrolling the feature tree. When clicking on something in the feature tree. When clicking on something in the graphics area. When right clicking to edit something. While making a simple sketch. While showing or hiding something. While changing the color of something. Or even while just sitting there idle on the screen not doing anything at all!
We have ran every diagnostic known to man. We have tried following tips on setting SolidWorks options and Windows options to optimal performance settings. We have disabled all add-ins. We work off of files saved locally. We have followed steps about correcting known SolidWorks issues, such as the one where a Windows security updates conflicted with SolidWorks (KB3072630). All of our hardware drivers and Windows updates are all up to date. The graphics drivers are the correct certified versions by SolidWorks. We use decent workstation level computers from Dell with good Quadro video cards, plenty of processor power, lots of RAM, and plenty of hard drive space.
We have even redone the computers from scratch (format and re-install Windows and SolidWorks etc.) multiple times in the past year. We have even upgraded to newer computers. And this brings me to the more interesting bit. I was "upgraded" by my company against my choice from a high-end Xeon desktop workstation to one of the newer Dell i7 workstation laptops (M3800). I immediately starting having a slew of problems, including greatly increased crashing, even though this was a brand new computer with nothing ever installed on it before. So we reformatted and re-installed this new computer and it still did not help. Then we deleted my entire company user profile (the IT people at my company like to transfer a persons entire user profile from one machine to another when ever they "upgrade" or change things around here). This actually did clear up a lot of the other issues I was experiencing, and did seem to reduce the frequency of crashing. But notice I said 'reduce' not eliminate the crashing.
So here I sit after a years worth of literally going through about every possible thing a person can go through to trouble-shoot the crashing issues, and still it has not been resolved. The software still crashes randomly at least several time per day. And it is more frequent for me than for another user here is the office who is still using one of the older desktop workstations like I had before. But again, I want to emphasize that he too still encounters relatively frequent crashes, just not quite as often as I do.
