Who else has seen this?
I am working and SAVING for hours . I hit the undo in a sketch and the model proceeds to unbuild all of the work I have done since I opened the model.
I remember this activity back in 2008.
I am doing some complex surfacing. To see it dissolve in front of my eyes is heart rending and infuriating.
Has anyone else seen this?
I am using a track ball not a mouse.
I just looked for a button repeat setting and there is none in the mouse controls.
I cannot use a standard mouse for ergonomic reasons.
I don't think SW is off the hook though.
I use the undo for other programs and I have never seen any other software do this.
When have you ever seen a word document evaporate in front of you?

My first experience with solid modeling was with Solid edge.
I remember one update where they forgot to put the undo button in entirely.
Try working without an undo.
Solidworks has some control of this. I have done enough VB development to know that much.
I don't think this is the end of this discussion just saying it's the mouse.

Just to be clear. The Undo function worked past the point where you had saved?
Do you mean auto-recover? Are you relying solely on the auto-recover function? Auto-recover is different from auto saving...
I have auto recover turned on. every 15 minutes.
I have not seen a separate auto save.
It rolled back two hours worth of work. That is all I am certain of at this point.
Since there was no crash there was no auto recover when I closed the part and reopened.
It re opened in the state it was in when I started work this morning.
Yes, they are different. The locations for each can be found in "tools-options-system options - backup/recover"
There is a save notification but no auto-save.
You should also enable the "backup" settings.
Auto save is the muscle memory in your left hand to hit ctrl-s all the time. Your hand's already over there so it's real easy to press it every time you exit a feature or change something and before you know it, it will be second nature and you won't even have to think about it.

As Zac said, you need to manually save often. Then when you have a problem with a file you can close it without saving and when you re-open it should be at the point where you last saved. There are at least 3 ways to save: use one of them regularly.
I have decided that I am going to ask solidworks two questions in the form of an enhancement request.
1. Why is there no true auto-SAVE? We all know as part of our regular activity we must "save often". We (as operators) should not need to physically strike the save key after every action to insure that our work is secure.
2. The undo function clearly needs some work. I do not know what that means. It appears to be the only function that is susceptible to mouse button BOUNCE.

I can't speak for SolidWorks, but here's my opinion on the idea anyway. A true auto-save would have users complaining about being interrupted in the middle of an operation while their model saved. I can also envision (and have experienced) instances where a user would decide after working for a while that he didn't want to keep the recent changes. It's easy enough to close the model without saving, then open it back up at the point where it was last saved (eliminating the need to depend on the Undo feature). However, if you think there should be an auto-save feature, you're certainly free to submit the request.
There is a Save reminder feature that you can set for the desired time period (see below) if you tend to go for long periods without saving. I find it helpful.

I do a lot of prototype work where I'll "try something" after getting the file to a certain point & saving it. An "Auto-save" function would be disastrous in this situation.
I've added "redo" to my toolbar (Ctrl+Y), it also has a drop-down. It's not available on every command but I use it quit often.
I agree with Glenn, I would not want it saving over my main copy automatically. Auto-recover I have had infrequent success with. Auto backup I definitely recommend if you don't have PDM. But now that we have PDM I can just go back to a vault copy anyway, so more redundant now, but still some value.
I don't understand why you would lose work going back all 2 hours, when (per OP) it sounds like you were manually saving (but maybe not at the end?). Did you accidentally save again, after the bad Undo? Anyway, I'm sure you lost work, and that sucks, and SW should make it difficult for that to happen.
I agree that Undo could use some improvements.
Glenn - I notice you have 4 backup copies set - does it actually remove the old backups? Last I heard "remove backups older than x" only works if you keep only one backup (SPR 448057). I currently keep one backup for 30 days.
I don't think we can do anything with the ER number until they reply and make it an SPR or some such.

No, it doesn't remove the backups. Which is good, because if I didn't have those to look back at to see what I'd been working on on any given day I'd never get my time sheet filled out at the end of the month (or a week into the next month, which often happens).
After seeing all the feedback and some from my re seller and Solidworks.........
I would rephrase the question (from the perspective of a non coder).
How hard would it be to leverage the auto-recover?
Could it be used as a sort of buffer and act like the windows restore point?
it works pretty well when there is a crash, can it be converted into a tool?
The program could save the parts metadata and dump it after a period of time?
Kind of like a rolling, constant 1/2 save.
I guess that is what the undo is intended to do but it doesn't, and the redo is all but useless.
Having restore / recover points in a model could be a real help.
I will admit that I have gone down a few blind alleys and had to do some back peddling from time to time.
Solidworks is a great tool, of that there is no doubt, but .......
I am surprised that this problem has not been encountered by more users. It has happened to me infrequently, but it does happen. At least with me it is always when I am in a sketch, and yes, it undoes the whole session. Since I am handling such large files that they can take 15 minutes to save (in a high speed SATA drive!!) it tends to be impractical to save any more frequently than 30 minutes, but I do save often. This radical undo is a vicious glitch.

we had backup save every 10-15 mins until
we changed the mouse awhile back-
tech cleaned that mouse and all good then-
but also reset the button repeat speed
