Part Naming in a Assembly

Hi All,

During one of my past projects I had a skid assembly with Skid Structure, Pipe Spools, Valves, Electrical Boxes etc. During the project, I needed to display different assembly states such as only the skid structure, or only the valves or only the skid structure. I used Display States for this (although I had to make configurations also to check weights of each type of assembly).

1. My question is when we have a big assembly, what naming culture should be adopted for the parts? For example if I can have all the valves in one group. Valves can be named such as Valve 6in, Valve 8in and so on. Or should I name the part numbers which consists of numbers such as 001, 002, 003....? I want some naming system where I can select all items at one go, in the same item group. From a good engineering practice perspective what method should I use?

Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Regards,

LS
