Thanks, but it still didn't work. The part is bent kind of like a cone shape. Coworkers at work said it's because its a imported file that was not created in Solidworks.
Can you upload the file so I can have a look at it?
The part has to have one flat face or one straight edge without a curve on it in order to insert the bends. I have ran into problems with cone shaped parts because the edge will actually be a slight curve. If you could upload it or show an image of the part it would be easier to determine.

I start off with a curved solid body:
I then go to my sheet metal tab and select "insert bend":
From here I select an edge on my model and insert the appropriate bend parameters:
now have a sheet metal part that I can flatten:
