Good morning,
We are entering into the world of manufacture from CAD data.
We send STP files to our suppliers, together with keypoint drawings.
We are anxious that we remove, as far as possible, the opportunity for the wrong STP file to be used. To that end, we send PDF keypoint drawings. The revision and version of the associated STP file are typed on the keypoint drawing.
One of our concerns is that the drawing and STP file are updated, but the note referring to the STP file is missed, so it refers to the incorrect file.
We think that a good way to handle this may be to attach the STP file to the PDF of the keypoint drawing. In that case, we would not need to type the Revision and Version, but would rather include a note along the lines of:
'Manufacture using the attached STP file'.
I wonder, has anyone used this method of control, and does anyone see any reason why it should not be successful?
I look forward to learning from your experience.
Cheers,
John

Hi John,
We engrave the actual part number and rev number into the solid model. If we don't want to see it on a drawing or such, we can:
a. Embed inside of the inner volume of the part
b. Place it on an inconspicuous place on the surface of the part
For SLA, etc. parts, we use REV 1, 2, 3....etc. For machined parts that may rev after initial machining, we use REV I, II, III, IIII, then a IIII with a hash through it so additional rev's can be added if necessary.
