Is there anybody using solidworks with VMware Horizon and Nvidia Grid K2?
We are in a POC right now with about 7 users. We have been for a while now.
Also, Is anyone using SolidWorks PDM Proffesional (EPDM) and VMware Horizon? How is the local cache handled?
If you are using a floating pool then the cache is wiped out at each log out. Make sure the users check back in their changes before logging out. We had that issue with some users. Once they got into the habit there wasn't a problem.
We are getting ready to deploy our own system for testing.
1. We created a Golden Image but we were not able to include the EPDM client in this. Don't know why yet. We will script it after when we provision clients.
2. In creating the vault view to EPDM should we choose "For all users..." or "Only for me" in the View Setup?

I did find S-065697 that details the vault view should be created as Private. The solution has a PDF on how to setup EPDM client in Grid VCA console.
Hi Maurizio, did you end up going ahead with nVidia Grid? If so, how is the experience going? In your opinion, would the system be usable by users in New Zealand with the server located in Germany? Looking forward to hearing from you.
Paddy, this will likely not work for two reasons, licensing and performance. You will need a network license server that is local to your private VDI server so that would mean it is installed in Germany but if your users are in NZ, then that would require a global license(check the EULA for global zones for network licensing). Also performance will be so bad that it would be unusable. Successful VDI require at least 5mbps up/down to the server and less than 50ms latency, anything other then that will provide too much delay and low resolution to make it successful.

Hi there, just want to add some information.
We built up an engineering site in Asia, but all engineering data resided in Germany. Because of the complexity (and non-PDM-managed data structures) we decided to install VDI-Servers in Germany (local to the working data) and place only thin clients in Asia. WAN Line was first a simple leased line with 100Mbit, later a MPLS. Latency was up to 160ms.The Video protocol (Teradici at that time) seemed very robust to thet fact. Performance (even openGL) was acceptable (compared to a CAD-Workstation). The line utilization was below 100Mbit. We had approx 70-80 engineers (different roles from 2D to 3D) connected to 5 VDI Servers with 2 nvidia K1 Cards each (Project started 2015). Solidworks License Server was located in Germany (near to VDI), but licenses were dedicated to asian engineers. For license agreement its relevant where the employer of the engineers is located. So (based on my VAR information) it is not important where the server is located but where the maintenance is paid.
Maybe that help for decisions going with CAD-VDI's.
