Any way to move or create the 17.70 diam dimn to the detailed view? Tried Crtl drag and Shift drag, no joy,
So if I understand what you are asking you want your dimension to go from this
I see while I was putting together my response Jim Sculley posted possible solution so maybe one of those will work for you. The method I used is first (as Andrej Oblak stated) turn off center dimension.
next click on the Leaders tab and check Custom Text Position and select the last option Broken leader, Aligned Text.
Next right click on the extension line
And select Hide Extension Line
Now right click on the dimension line
And select Hide Dimension Line
All that is left is to position the dimension value where you want it.
I believe the workaround is to make the detail sketch larger so you can select the opposite edge then shrink the sketch circle back to original size. Other way is if the dimension is in your model, import it into your drawing view.
yes that gives me the dimn but it remains the length of the feature with the second further anchor point, is there a way to truncate/trim the dimn?
This is because the dimension is centered. Uncheck "Center Dimension" and then you can move it to a position.
Also another way to dimension this feature is to select first line of the feature in detail view and the second line of the feature in the original view. After you place the dimension in detail view, you still have to uncheck "Center Dimension".

Try right clicking the dimension line and see if 'Foreshorten' is available as an option. Sometimes, if you are lucky, it is there. most times it isn't. Foreshortened dimensions are a huge weak point with SOLIDWORKS:
Foreshorten DIA Dimensions (detail veiw from section veiw)
Side view diameter dimension won't foreshorten
Detail View With Foreshortened Dimension. Looking for your methods used!
What is wrong with foreshortened?
