hi guys, how do I make a plugin for previewing other CAD files? if I have a preview in the Explorer
probably will not prevent a few detail of the question, for example:
- what types of files are necessary,
- what version of PDM,
- what Files PreViewing settings?
1. CAD system which does not support pdm. It's COMPAS 3D .
2. 2018 full
3. it doesn’t matter, becouse the CAD is not supported
I want to make this plugin.
Victor,.. maybe contact Kompas to find out if they have some suggestions with executing their Viewer inside or outside of the PDM?
Investigate the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SolidWorks\Applications\PDMWorks Enterprise\FileFormats] on a client machine. I'm unfamiliar with the Kompas system but you can add file extensions here and point to a built-in preview tool that EPDM can recognize. That's a limited list that I've never seen anyone add to (full list of options is at the bottom of that key: 2DeditorPlugin.dll - XpsPlugin.exe). You might have some luck using eDrawings but I doubt it, or if you have a way to preview in IE then you can use HtmlPlugin.dll. Be sure to restart all the EPDM processes and Explorer after editing this (or just reboot) for the changes to take effect.
Maybe it will be useful:

.. Sam Sam very kewl!.. it looks like what Victor Kivon is looking for!?
KOMPAS-3D EPDM Connector | AMC Bridge
yes i saw . KOMPAS is now version 17-18.. file data format has changed in 15 ver
It's not work
I see file in this form. This file have meta data with 4 files xml and one xml file for preview
By means of Notepad files can be opened? What program for opening is installed by default?
Try to set up Programs for Viewing. Look whether there are no files of xml - in Viewing exceptions.
XML Card is set?
yes, i can open of notepad, these files do not have .xml attr - no it's xml
FILE = ZIP archive = 5 files xml > not have attr .xml
What's XML Card?
Oh, file preview it's not xml file.
In the SolidWorksPDM folder there shall be a Default Cards folder.
Click on it 2 times or open by means of CardEdit.exe.
But the card will be of no use - everything depends on contents of the file - on it the Card can be set up.

Most often - XML - the data interchange file format between applications.
On video from AMC - files of *.cdw have no archives.
Perhaps it is so displayed an inner pattern of the file (which probably switch-off is necessary somehow).
It is unlikely it has some practical application and it is hardly possible to view it.
In my opinion this deadlock direction also will give nothing (but for 100% I cannot approve it).
The bigger value has Variable Block - CommonProp for relation of file attributes with the Card.
if if I needed attributes - I would ask about them. Stop flame. I need f .. preview. Not data ... Data is easy to get without this plugin.
Victor,.. a thought,.. if you have not tried... install the Kompas program (the demo and the viewer).. now, does windows show at least the thumbnail preview?
In the standard Windows Explorer, miniatures were already displayed. I have a lot of CAD systems. Solid, Inventor, Kompas
Well.. good luck.. the list of viewers which TenLinks posted.....
There are a lot.. and https://viewer.kisters.de/en.html was on of the better ones... he was responsive about options.. maybe he would have dev contacts for Kompas?
..and this one looked promising?

If your are required knowledge and something to make desire?
It is a little more information:
Previewing files in explorer view preview tab
Viewing CADRA files in EPDM (eDrawings)
Total Comander - with SolidWorks I tried (not without problems), with Kompas I don"t tried.
If to return to displaing of subfiles at the *.cdw file is most likely because of the viewing of contents of *.zip files included by default in Windows.
As any archiver it shows contents. Possibly it just coincidence, and is possible that developers used some type of the archiver for the compound file.
It has no relation to a preview. If switch-off tools*.zip in Windows - these files should disappear (this assumption - I don't check).
Did not try it?
