Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Jeremy Yee Nov 2, 2016 6:34 PM (in response to Douglas George)We have the same issue, though I have not yet spent any time trying to find the culprit.
Our models/assemblies are typically mechanical fabrications using weldments and single-body part files - no PCB type parts.
-
Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Jeremy Yee Nov 3, 2016 3:32 PM (in response to Jeremy Yee)My issue was resolved by renaming the current user registry, as suggested by our VAR.
Browse to HKEY_CURRENT USER>Software>SolidWorks and rename SolidWorks to anything you like. This will force SW to create a new default SolidWorks key the next time it's launched, which will also mean you'll lose any custom settings.

Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Dennis Dohogne Dec 20, 2016 11:48 AM (in response to Kevin Moss)Kevin Moss and Jeremy Yee,
I was having an intolerable problem of slow opening in SWX2017 - hours to open (or try to open) a large assembly that only took a minute or two in SWX2016.
I had just installed SWX2017 late last week and was pulling my hair out. Even with my VAR's help we weren't solving it. I had run a repair on 2017 and then when that didn't work I uninstalled and reinstalled it, still with no improvement until I tried the steps recommended by you two. Between your two suggestions of changing the folder name in HKEY_CURRENT USER and deleting the paths (I had two) in the Referenced Documents location I am now operating at normal speed in 2017.
A BIG THANKS to both of you!
By the way, I don't know which one of these two suggestions really solved the problem. I'm just happy to be running at a normal speed.

Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Wojciech Paterski Nov 3, 2016 3:45 AM (in response to Douglas George)what you mean, it takes hours instead of few minutes? that doesn't sound right.
but have you resaved everything in new file version, or is it opening 'read only' files and everytime you close and open it has to go through opening files in previous version and rebuild them to 2017 version.
try opening and saving all in 2017 version - see if that helps. (still shouldn't happen - that's a long wait)
-
Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Douglas George Nov 3, 2016 9:41 AM (in response to Wojciech Paterski)Yes, I've done all that. ALL of the files have been re-saved as 2017 format. I had to do some of the files individually because for some bizarre reason the software would miss many of them when I saved the whole assembly.
It doesn't change anything. An individual circuit board part - something as simple as a rectangular box - takes a good chunk of a minute to load. The entire board, with only the mechanically significant components included, takes over half an hour.
This only affects parts that were originally imported as solid models (e.g. from an Altium Designer export). Anything that I originally created inside Solidworks works just fine.
Right now I'm completely stalled and unable to proceed with my work. Am considering reverting back to 2016.

Douglas George Nov 3, 2016 1:21 PM (in response to Glenn Schroeder)I am about to.
Additional information: I installed Solidworks 2017 on my home machine, and it does NOT experience the issue. This must be an installation issue. Maybe a bad plug-in?

John Stoltzfus Nov 4, 2016 7:14 AM (in response to Douglas George)I've noticed the first time opening a file in 2017 it is extremely slow, however it's a once and done thing here, the next time it's super fast..
-
Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Douglas George Nov 4, 2016 4:36 PM (in response to John Stoltzfus)Yes I need to resave in 2017 format, but I've already done that.
I just figured out how to solve the issue. I went into the plug-ins dialog, and turned off the Composer and Forum plug-ins. These were the only two enabled.
I figure Forums is probably innocuous, so it looks like the Composer plug-in was causing the issue. Weird.
Problem solved, apparently!

Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Ryan McVay Dec 20, 2016 11:53 AM (in response to Douglas George)Douglas George I'm of the opinion that the problem is not solved. You had to remove a SW plug-in. At this point, you have a work around which isn't a resolution and could effect others. Could you attempt to add the plug-in back into SW and see if the slow down returns? If so, then report to VAR and SW and open a ticket to "solve" the plug-in issue so that the rest of us don't have to use a work around. Thanks in advance!
-
Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Ian Worrall Jan 26, 2017 3:29 AM (in response to Douglas George)The Forums plugin is NOT innocuous, at least to UK users.
Activating it forces SW to use the American date format (MM/DD/YYYY) instead of the correct UK one (DD/MM/YYYY) set in Windows.

Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
S. Casale Jan 4, 2017 10:49 AM (in response to Douglas George)The marked answer for this is not the fix or correct. Everyone of our users has one plug-in selected PDM. So the removal of a plug-in does not fix long load times.
This is a known issue that SW needs to address with a fix (likely an SPR).
We have files that once took 1 minute to load taking 10. We have files that took 4 minutes to load now taking 25-30 minutes.
All files previously were 2015 and we are now trying to open 2017 SP1.
We have run Registry fixes and the like to now avail. This is a 2017 issue.

Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Dennis Dohogne Jan 4, 2017 11:22 AM (in response to S. Casale)S. Casale, I agree with you 100% that this is a 2017 problem.
I happened to stumble across this post and the suggestions to fix the problem and it's a good thing I did as my VAR had not been able to solve it. I did two of the items mentioned and my problem was solved. Now my VAR has broadcast this to his support staff to use in case they have others with the same problem.
HOWEVER (all caps is for the SWX moderators), I should not have had the problem in the first place!!! In all my years and multiple machines of installing SWX I have never had this problem until version 2017. My computer and everything on it is kept very clean. I don't use social media or anything that is far from the norm. About the only software I use is SWX and MS Office. So why was this a problem on this computer and not my home computer or my co-worker's computer?
I also have a strange problem with a few particular assembly drawings not being able to be reopened. My VAR has sent it to corporate, but we have nothing back from them yet.
I am very wary of SWX2017.

Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Ryan McVay Jan 4, 2017 12:00 PM (in response to Dennis Dohogne)So as it stands we have two possible "work around".
1. Is another blasted registry hack to force SW to rewrite new registry keys for the user.
2. Is to remove plug-ins..not sure which plug-in might be causing the issues.
Either way you look at this, and I have to agree with Dennis Dohogne, these are not solutions.
-
Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Dennis Dohogne Jan 4, 2017 12:05 PM (in response to Ryan McVay)Ryan McVay, What you listed as number 2, removing auto-loading of plugins, did not do anything to help me. I actually think the one thing that did the trick was deleting the paths in the Referenced Documents. Why this would be a problem now and not before or on other machines is beyond me.
As you stated these are not solutions, they are work-arounds to a problem that should not exist.

Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Dennis Dohogne Jan 6, 2017 1:43 PM (in response to S. Casale)S. Casale, Could you tell us what you had and what you ended up with? My VAR wants to insist that the solution to my problem was resetting the registry key, but I think it was the file location reference.
-
Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
S. Casale Jan 6, 2017 1:48 PM (in response to Dennis Dohogne)We did all of the above including the registry reset. That didn't fix the problem.
A little back story:
Due to our Pre-vault file structure (2015) having many duplicate file names, and a lot of those files saved in user personal folders that were being migrated to the vault we need to have the reference documents specifically set up to look in the vault top level.
C:\"Vault"
Pre-2017, having the vault top level as one of the places that is sought for search on file opening was not a problem.
Somewhere during 16 and 17, that caused some major issues.
After all that's said and done, removing the above mentioned reference document immediately fixed our load problem.

Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
S. Casale Jan 4, 2017 2:29 PM (in response to S. Casale)One example, A 15.7mb .sldasm file has taken 15 minutes to open now and the progress bar is about 1/3 finished.
With all due respect, in my opinion this needs to be kept at the top of the forum list because it's going to cost companies lots of money when they have to wait to load their business critical design files.
This should not be marked correct.

Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Francisco Martínez Jan 4, 2017 12:55 PM (in response to Douglas George)I have the exact same issue, VAR did the install and they left it broken.
I hope they fix this soon. I tried the 2 bandaids list here but Im still hanging on startup. No parts or assemblys , just sw2017 and it takes 4-5 minutes. On the sw splash window it says loading registry and just sits there, once it does load you can see it loading other items and seconds after that it is open.

Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Francisco Martínez Feb 24, 2017 12:09 PM (in response to Matt Biederwolf)I did because of the issues I was having with sw and alphacam.
I first attempted to just reinstall sw2017, however it did not fix the problem on my pc.
You may not have to go to that extreme, I was at a stand still so I had no choice.

Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Steven Tietz Feb 26, 2017 9:10 AM (in response to Douglas George)We had this exact same issue. but the root cause fix for us was to UNCHECK, System Options -> External References -> "Include Sub-Folders". Removing the paths from File Locations ->Reference Documents does NOT fix the issue for those of us who need those paths there. Unchecking this new option, makes 2017 do it's old 2016 recursive search instead of dramatically increasing the open times by looking through the subfolders to find missing references.
For those who do not experience long load times but yet still have Ref Document paths & this option checked can be explained by two possible scenarios. Either those users do not have very many sub folders, or possibly the assembly they are opening do not have broken references thus causing the sub folder search to not take very long or not happen at all. This worked for us & I hope it helps others.

Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Dennis Dohogne Mar 3, 2017 3:26 PM (in response to Douglas George)It is really unfortunate that after more than 20 years of this software we are encountering such debilitating problems with something as simple as start-up. Here we are, 4-5 months after SP0.0 was first made available for download, that we are just now getting notice of a tech bulletin. Worse is this tech bulletin only telling us of various things for us to try as work-arounds rather than providing a link to a solid fix.
It is a sad, sad statement on the condition of the software.

Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Philip Lane Mar 10, 2017 4:57 AM (in response to Dennis Dohogne)Appalling. Am going to recommend missing 2017 altogether and stay with 2016-SP5. It is stable, and I am not seeing too many terminal Explorer fails which was happening with SP3 & 4. Maybe 2 per week instead of 3 per day.
I would recommend upgrading to PDM2017 as there are some excellent new features there, and it supports SW2016.
At my last company, I pursuaded them to invest in 25 new high-spec workstations as they were 7 years old, and ran some very good performance improvements tests with SW2013 on them....PDM 2015 was also much quicker.....up to 30%.
But then I upgraded to SW2015 and LO.....Solidworks had done something to try and stabilize the software which, once files were loaded, had the effect of completely negating the performance benefits of spending £50k on new workstations.
Just not acceptable.

I just started to have the same issues of very slow opening of files, exactly when I need to meet a deadline....
One of the files is taking over an hour to open and once it does, it very slow and it to freezes up again to then shut down on it's self.
I have tried the above suggestions of re-registering and deleting/ un-checking the Reference documents with no luck.
Laptop Spec's below:
- Dell M3800

- Win10,
- 64Gb ram,
- 512SSD,
- Quadro K1100 graphics card.
- 2017 Solidworks. SP4.
Any help would be appreciated!!

Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Edward Poole Aug 28, 2017 8:28 AM (in response to Allan Wong)Allan, if you're on subscription, it may be time to get the VAR involved. As Marco Janssen mentioned earlier, imported parts can bring issues all their own into the mix. I once had a blower housing import that I basically tried to clean-up by adding and subtracting features etc., and it kept dragging on open, even rotating the model was slow, my VAR said it was the imported model, so I substituted the unmolested model in there and poof! back to normal. It is what it is I guess, I should stop being such a perfectionist...

Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Marco Janssen Aug 28, 2017 3:01 AM (in response to Allan Wong)I have had the same here. What I did find out was the following:
Some parts I used in my drawings (downloaded or obtained from suppliers). Contained a lot of detail, and than I mean a lot of surfaces even inside the modeled part. By removing the detail and surfaces of these parts my drawing now opens quickly again.
So maybe an option to check third party parts you have added lately, as you state it just started to load slowly.

Re: Solidworks 2017 extremely slow to load
Aaron Hayden Oct 4, 2017 10:02 AM (in response to Douglas George)My VAR had the solution. There is a new feature in 2017 for referenced document folders to look in sub-solders. It is turned on by default. If you have your file locations pointed to a large network folder, like we do, this will be a major problem.
The setting can be found in System Options – External References. Uncheck "Include sub-folders" under "Search external references in:"
