Thanks Justin. But the techniques in the video do not work. I could change the colors of the parts in the assembly until a few days ago. I believe it occurred when I changed the view. At first I clicked the add sunlight tab. Then I clicked the add directional light tab. Now I cannot change the color in the assembly at all and it is very frustrating! I can however click on the appearance ball on the right, choose a color, then right click it and click add to part. But that changes the color of the entire assembly, not just the individual parts, as I want.

Nothing is working. I cannot change the appearance of the individual parts in the assembly. All parts are the same color in the assembly, even though they are really different colors individually.
Here is a sample assembly that has different individually colored parts that cannot be changed in the assembly itself.

The appearances applied in assembly overwrite the part appearances. Check if attached files are what you looking for?
Thanks Deepak. Your assembly is keeping the original colors of the parts. How do I set my assemblies to keep the original appearance and color? Or should I delete the appearance settings in the assembly? If so, how do I do that? As I said, I cannot go into an assembly and change a part color. When I attempt to change the color appearance of a part while in an assembly, the appearance of the part will not change in the assembly, but will be changed when I go back to the part file.
Deepak, I have been going through your assembly today and can easily change the appearance of the different parts in your assembly. But I cannot do the same in mine. I have been looking at your assembly, compared to mine, and cannot see the difference. There must be a setting that is different in your assembly that is allowing me to change the appearance, but I have no idea what it is.
If you know what the setting is, please let me know.
Sta,, try this. Click on the blue ball and select remove appearance. This is the appearance assigned to your assembly.
You will still not be where you want to be so edit your ambient light in the display manager. You are going to need some light.
You should probably open your assembly template and make the changes then re-save so you don't have issues in the future.
I noticed that you have two "cylinder 2" in the assembly. No cylinder 1. You might also want to remove the overrides you have in the assembly to get your part colors. Kinda confusing huh?..

I like to use the View Appearances property manager to figure out and control appearances. As shown below, the appearances under "Components" are assigned in the assembly, the others in the component file.

WOW, this is a really long time and many knowledgeable SW users and STILL no good answer to this question. I am waiting to find the answer. SW user for 20 years. Can Anyone explain this without using meaningless words?

Are you sure that the Display pan is expanded?
I spent ages trying to find why my appearance didn't update. I was checking the appearance structure (i.e. right-click the part and check the appearance tree), changing material - nothing.
Opened this appearance 'dock', and there they were... Solved at the expense of my sanity. Thanks.
How can you have overrides that are hidden and can only be see in this dock?! Anyway, this solved my issue. Solidworks team... WTF?!

I cannot get this to work either (sometimes-- and this is one of those times). Both component and assembly color set to orange. Part is still grey (see below)

I'm not sure if this is what happened with you, but there are situations where you can change the colour, and nothing happens.
When you try to edit the appearance you get options such as part, body, feature or face. If you get the order wrong you can end up with appearances going odd/wild. I have no idea why you have the option of part and body if it's a single body model you get the option, but there it is; you can change the body and not the part, and something doesn't update properly. Always go for part and not body (I think. The rules are still not perfectly clear to me...)
However, I still have many, many problems with appearances that change of their own accord, even threaded holes that show cosmetic tread detail when I have removed the threaded area, but only on one hole out of 3. This has been months in discussion, and still no answer except update to 2018. Every year SW says that all problems have been fixed in the next version...
You have applied a gray appearance to the entire assembly, which overrides all other part & sub-assembly appearances!
Just DELETE that assembly appearance. (yellow arrow)
You can also:
Right click on the main assembly in the feature tree, then click on the color/appearance drop-down menu and delete (red cross) the appearance set to the main assembly.

I also had the same problem. what worked was clicking on the " appearance (Color) ball " of the main component of the assembly and selecting remove all component appearance.

Think I had a similar problem with an assembly: could not get the color ball to show at all on any item in the assembly. Tried dragging and dropping a color from the appearances property manager onto a part and it told me it cannot add a color while in section view. I turned off the section and was able to get the color ball and change part colors at the assembly level.
