# How to show linking between dimensions in drawing

Hello,

I am having a doubt. How do I show in a drawing that two dimensions (in two different parts) are linked? One dimension on a part has to be adjusted based on the the actual dimension after fabrication of another part.

For example I have a wheel and a shaft. In drawing I want to tell in the drawing to measure the hole size in wheel after fabrication and then adjust the shaft size accordingly to fit the hole. So essentially the Hole dia in wheel is master dimension and the shaft dia is dependent on it.

You could create a new assembly, insert new component (the wheel) draw the shape and extrude, the wheel part would be in edit mode when adding the geometry, so you would have to exit the edit mode and then insert new component (the shaft) and draw the shape, but use the center hole in the wheel for the outside diameter of the shaft and extrude, close the file... now when you change the center hole of the wheel the shaft outside diameter changes..

Dear John,

Thank you for the answer, but that is not what I am looking for.
I believe what you are referring is top - Down assembly procedure.

What I am looking for is that how to show it in drawing. I want to convey to the shop floor that the two dimensions are linked (in drawing). And that one should be measured and the second part should be adjusted accordingly.

Regards,

Sankar

Then just add a note in the dimension value box

We do this all the time.....

We will create a hole with a specific tolerance on Part 1, let's say .5000" +.0000"/-.0005", then we label that hole, "Hole X"

Then, the item that needs to go into that hole, lets say it is press fit.

I will put the diameter of the item in parenthesis, and then put a note under the dimension:

Light press fit for Part 1, Hole X

Interference range: .0001"/.0005"

Insert the dimension for the shaft diameter, then over-ride the dimension text and insert something like "same as hole diameter".

Don't want to be miss typing that notation.
