Re: Replaced component same no. in bom?

Significant additions were made to Keep Missing Item in SW2015. This setting in your BOM PropertyManager will control how replacement is handled, with numerous choices on how you wish your BOM to behavior.

Tom dunn Feb 15, 2017 1:14 PM (in response to robert dattilo)You should be able to move the item in the bom to the desired location you want and have the item numbers update accordingly

Re: Replaced component same no. in bom?
robert dattilo Feb 15, 2017 4:36 PM (in response to Tom dunn)Hello;
Thanks for the replies. I know you can move the item etc., but again I thought the idea was to have SW do that
for you. In general engineering practice, I would think that you'd just about always want the replaced component to retain
the some position, & item number. So like in your rev you could say something like aaa was xxx, & it's just changed.
I was under the impression that there's a setting that allows you to do that started in 2015, but when I checked the
"Do not change item numbers", it doesn't seem to have that effect. If you're doing one drawing it's not as much of an issue,
but if you wanted to change 30 drawings, it would be a pain etc.
Thanks, again;

Re: Replaced component same no. in bom?
robert dattilo Feb 15, 2017 5:05 PM (in response to Matthew Lorono)Hello;
This is what the help says to do. "If you select Do not change item numbers in the BOM PropertyManager and you change the file name (for example, using Save As or Replace Component) within the referenced assembly, the BOM table retains the BOM item number of the original component being replaced."
Sounds just like what I would like to happen, but
this is what I get.
Doesn't seem to be working;
Thanks for input;

Re: Replaced component same no. in bom?
robert dattilo Feb 16, 2017 8:32 AM (in response to Matthew Lorono)Hello Mathew;
I tried checking that also, but it still shoots it down to the bottom & makes it no. 23. If I check only the one you suggested it shoots it down to the bottom & makes it another no. 22. At this point I'll probably pull the 23 into place, but this was a good enhancement idea, if you can get it to work.
Any other thoughts;

Re: Replaced component same no. in bom?
Jim Steinmeyer Feb 15, 2017 5:21 PM (in response to robert dattilo)And here I thought General Engineering Practice was to make life easier for the shop to find parts by sorting the BOM numerically. Guess General Engineering Practice can change depending on company standards and who set them up. Thus all the different options. And they still don't have what I NEED!

Re: Replaced component same no. in bom?
Tom dunn Feb 16, 2017 8:44 AM (in response to robert dattilo)I had a bom the other day where I substituted one part for another and the numbering got all messed up no matter what I tried. I ended up deleting the bom table and created new one and the numbers straighten out. Not sure if this is an option. I know you said something about 30 drawings. To do this that way would sort of "not be nice". I was going to say Suck, but thought it not appropriate to use in that sentence. hmmmm.

I have had to resort to "delete and recreate" many times. Seems to work better.
