I hate it when I am viewing a part from a specific side and I open a sketch, then exit with the RED X and it changes my view to the isometric view.
Why does SW do this? Is there a good reason? or an option I can turn off?
Why don't you just select the sketch button again to exit instead????
She may be trying to discard changes and exit sketch.
When I exit a sketch using the red X the view returns to the position the screen was in just before I edited the sketch. It does not go to isometric.
My view always returns to normal as well. I just thought that maybe exiting a different way might give a different outcome but I know see from the responses below that it is a setting behaviour.
I'm wondering if this is all tied to undo markers? A marker is create when you enter the sketcher environment. What do you think? I wouldn't think that a pre-selection (select your face first) isn't a recorded event??
I just did some checking. For me, if the option shown below is selected, then when I exit a sketch the model will return to the orientation it was in when I opened the sketch. If it's off, then when I exit the sketch the model stays in whatever position it was in when the sketch was closed. If you want that option turned on (and I can't imagine not wanting it on), but don't want the model to rotate back to it's previous position, I'd suggest an Enhancement Request. (Unless of course someone else replies with more or conflicting information.)
Check out this little setting.
The red X means cancel everything you just changed.
It seems that what other users have been saying is correct but I noticed some odd behavior. When I go to create a sketch if I select the sketch plane and then invoke the sketch command with the "Auto-rotate view normal to sketch on sketch plane" active when I discard and exit the model rotates back to it's previous position. But if I invoke the sketch command first and then select the plane I am sketching on, when I exit it does not return to it's previous position.
Yeah I see that behavior as well.
If I start a select a plane, then the sketch tool and exit without actually creating it, the view goes back to the most-recent view - not the second-most-recent as it does when I open an existing sketch.
And it just stays on the sketch plane as you describe if I select the sketch tool, then the plane, then exit.
Thanks everyone for looking into this.
The auto-rotate works fine and I really like the option, but it does seem to create the issue.
After some investigation my view goes back to the second-most-recent view, which is usually the isometric view.
I recorded a video showing the issue.
I guess I will send it to my VAR to see if they know how to stop this from happening, but keep the auto-rotate option.
I forgot the normal to sketch plane step which I guess the program doesn't count.... which is why it seems like unexpected behavior to me.
This new video shows it better.
Hey, what the heck happened at the very end of your movie?
Looks like SW crashed on you?
Looks like normal SW behavior to me. ;-)
Hello Everyone, I'm looking into how to make the behavior consistent across different scenarios. If the option “Auto-rotate view normal to sketch plane” is selected and you exit sketch, what would be your preference?
Option 1: Always bring the model back to previous view.
Option 2: Always leave the model in current view.
Option 3: Bring to previous view only if you cancelled the command.
Option 3, IF the previous view is related to the normal-to-sketch-plane view, AND the current view IS the normal to the sketch plane, AND the auto-rotate were to work on new and existing sketches.
If the view is not normal to the sketch plane, I don't want you to change my view.
If the sketch wasn't cancelled, I don't want you to change my view.
And if the previous view was already normal to the sketch plane, and I do not cancel the sketch, leave it there! I don't want you to change my view.
Personally I'd prefer Option 2
On Second thought probably Option 3 would be better so that if you accidentally select the wrong surface to sketch from it snaps back to previous view and you can easily select again.
Hi Sarah Dwight and Eric Blankinship,
We've implemented some changes in SOLIDWORKS 2018 relating to this behavior. I notice that neither of you are signed up for/have access to the beta forum where we are discussing it. If you do have time to try it out in beta, we'd appreciate your feedback on this issue and you can do so in that thread. If not, we'd still appreciate your feedback so read on...
We're having a discussion in the beta forum about the behavior of what the view should do after exiting the sketch (as per Priya's previous request above), and the majority of people in that thread so far are saying Option 1. As a reminder, we are asking about is, when you create/edit a sketch and we have automatically rotate the view based on the option being set to do so, and then you exit the sketch, what would be your preference?
Option 1: Always bring the model back to previous view. (whether you have saved the sketch changes or canceled)
Option 2: Always leave the model in current view. (whether you have saved the sketch changes or canceled)
Option 3: Bring to previous view only if you cancelled the command. (if you save the sketch changes, the view will stay in the normal view).
So, I'm curious as to why you'd prefer Option 3 over Option 1 when first replying to this thread. In SOLIDWORKS 2018, option 3 has been implemented and it now works for both sketch creation (like 2017 and previous) and sketch editing. So even better would be for you to try it out and then give feedback after actual usage of the new implementation.
Thanks for bringing this to us on the other side.
For me personally, management won't allow the beta on a work computer. I imagine I'm not alone.
In order to be part of the discussion, do you think there is value for us to join the beta testers without actually installing the beta version?
I am glad that my proclamation of Option 1 above has swayed so many users...
I'm still an Option 1 vote.
Sure, it would be easiest to have the conversation all in one place, so if it is possible to join beta just to get into the beta forum (even if you don't install it), that would be great.
I know we don't want to add too many more items to the system options but - if the results of these options show that there is a mix of people who want different options then maybe it should be added to the system options so users can set their preferences instead of being forced to do it only one way. That or some easy selection tool that can be placed on the tool bar if desired.
It's nice to have options that are easy to set or change, but I don't want to constantly have to make those selections either (like in pop up boxes that ask what option you want every time you do something).
As a second thing to ask for the Auto-rotate view it would be nice for it to snap to a Iso view or user-defined orientation when initiating a 3D sketch. Don't know if anyone else has any thoughts on this but currently it just stays where it was previously for 3D sketch.
I can't replicate the issue you posted here
