When trying to install Solidworks 2013 SP2 on Windows 10, I get an error regarding Windows KB3072630. There are fixes online involving changing registry values, but I tried this and this didn't work. How can this be fixed?

Hi Thomas,
Did you get it solved? I had the same problem today installing SW2014 on Windows 10. KB3072630 is not installed in Windows 10 but apparently the situation is the same - probably because the patch KB3072630 is built into Windows 10 so-to-speak. Anyway - doing the manual trick with the registry-key solved the problem for me.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer]
"RemappedElevatedProxiesPolicy"=dword:00000001
Remember to set the value to 0 (zero) when the SOLIDWORKS installation/repair is completed.
Best regards
Jorn
Jorn,
Have you come across any other problems running SW 2014 on Win 10?
I'm looking to get a new computer, have SW 2014, and want to know of major issues before I do.
Thanks!
Hi Ryan,
No, I haven't experienced any other problems running SW2014 on Win 10 so far. SW crashes once in a while but not worse than with my previous PC running Win 7.
Just curious - What hardware are you looking at?
Regards,
Jorn
Hi Jorn,
How are you getting on with W10 and SW2014?
I need to upgrade my machine yet cannot afford to upgrade SW yet.
Regards,
Sam.
Sam,
I suggest you not try Windows 10 with SW2014 - your just asking for trouble.
Jorn Bjarning may have just gotten lucky with his hardware and his software settings, and he has not updated this post for almost a year!
- by now his system / software may have crashed and burned and he may have had to bite the bullet and upgrade.
I built up a new computer recently and specified that I wanted it to use Windows 7.
The system I got had the option and many companies offer to install either one.
Most businesses will not use Windows 10 after the problems with Windows 8, 8.1.
Windows 7 is very stable and will work with SW 2014-2017 without the problems you could face with 2014 on Windows10.
What would you do if you could not get SW2014 to work on Windows 10? - You would have to downgrade Windows or upgrade SW $$$$$$
Hi Sam,
SW2014 is running very fine in my Windows 10 environment :-). I haven't had any problems worth mentioning and I didn't come across any functions not working like intended. For me it has worked just as fine in Windows 10 as it did in Windows 7. No complaints at all!
I haven't heard of anyone reporting real problems with this combination. I am not saying there isn't but I didn't experience any and I didn't hear about others having trouble apart for the issue with KB3072630. But again, there are many corners of the software package I never use (Simulation for example) and of course I can't say that everything is working like it should.
SOLIDWORKS Corp. does not support SW 2014 on Windows 10 simply because last service pack for SW 2014 was released before Windows 10. SOLIDWORKS can and will not support older versions of their software for newer platforms. It makes good sense to me. If you go ahead with SW 2014 on Windows 10 (which I think you should) you just have be prepared for issues and know that SOLIDWORKS and your VAR can/will not help you.
Where I come companies have long been implementing Windows 10 and are very satisfied with it. Personally I am very happy with it.
A note on Microsoft Office: SW uses Microsoft Office functionality - for example when working with Design Tables. For a short period I worked with Office 2016 on the new Windows 10 laptop I got a year ago but I experienced problems when working with Design Tables so I downgraded Office to version 2013 and the problems disappeared.

Jorn
Hi Rick, Jorn,
Thanks for your input. I've set my self up as a freelance product design and had found a laptop that seemed capable of running Solidworks (I use 2013) but also had a Wacom enabled touchscreen, ideal for sketching, CAD, and presentations, but only available with Win10.
However, I have purchased a more CAD focused laptop, running Win7. Decided to forego sketching and pres. capabilities until I'm more settled professionally.
Hi Jorn Bjarning,
I am in ME school and I need to download SW 2014 SP3.0. I am having the same KB error pop up. I want to try the method you used with the manual installation and registry key, but I don't know how. I have tried looking it up and still cannot find a solution. I was hoping you could email me a detailed "how to" if it isn't too much of a bother. Thanks in advance I appreciate any help.
Chance
Hi Chance,
Sorry I didn't see your message to me. I wasn't notified about your message. I hope you got the problem solved. Otherwise and for others in the same spot, please study the official message from SOLIDWORKS here or the copy of the announcement in this thread.
FWIW, only SW15 SP5+ is supported on Win10 - SOLIDWORKS System Requirements | Windows and Mac | SOLIDWORKS
An issue with KB3072630 may just be the tip of the iceberg.
