Outside of PDM, does anyone know of a way to filter/search for SolidWorks files based upon custom properties? Any options for this in SWX Explorer?
What is your end purpose with finding those files?
My intent is to filter out drawings that correspond to a certain manufacturing process. One of the custom properties that we use internally is "PROCESS", which is populated with a value corresponding to our manufacturing processes. This in turn appears on our title block.
So far, I haven't found an easy way to filter for this property.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Do you want to make PDFs of them? I'm sure a macro can be written to create a list of drawing file names that matches a certain property.
Hi Kevin, I believe the only custom property available outside of PDM is Description (which is a standard Windows property), see my screenshot below:
I don't have SolidWorks Explorer to test, but again I don't believe you can configure columns there to look for custom properties.
A long time ago, when SW Explorer first came out, there was a way to search by custom properties. It was slow, (early 2000's, everything was kind of slow) so not something I used a lot, but boy was it handy when you needed it. That feature went away when they "improved" SW Ex' and I've missed it more than a few times since. At the moment I can't think of any particular reason I wanted to search by file property, but I know I have.
I've occasionally looked for similar functionality with no luck, so I hope someone has some ideas.
Let's hope this makes it to the Top Ten Enhancement requests for 2017!!!

As Steven said, is already doable.
Alin - Did you ever try to use Explorer, I'm sure you did but, it's awfully cumbersome to use, hangs up etc... It sounds like it's doable with PDM but not straight up out of the box!
It sure would be awesome to be able to search an entire drive based on a Custom Property, if it's already there and doable, then I need to learn something new
Have a look at the table at the bottom of 2014 SOLIDWORKS Workgroup PDM Help - SolidWorks Search.
I know it says workgroup but I tried this in SW Explorer and it searched files for the custom property CSA with the value No and got some search results.
Need to check that the folders for searching are correct as I think i'm missing a few results but it's a start.
This would be great, but it's not working for me. For example, when I do a search using the search string "process: mach", I get "No results found." Yet I know there are several files in the folder that I have highlighted with have that value for the process custom property.
Great in theory, but appears not to work as planned.
Perhaps I'm missing something here?
Check the utility being made by Joel Condevaux if that can help (or may be he can add to his utility):
Thanks for the tip. It doesn't seem to have the functionality I'm looking for, and it blew up on me the first time I used it.
I totally agree. The idea seems to be there but the execution of it is terrible. I use PDM and can set up custom columns for specific searches and then filter them which is great. The question is though will Solidworks sort this out in SWExplorer? I have my doubts as they have a ready made solution in PDM and trying to "up sell" you that product is there main objective. When was the last major innovation with regards to SWExplorer.
