Re: Adding a virtual component?
Matt Mengel Apr 1, 2016 9:51 AM (in response to Glenn Schroeder)This prompts me to save the part externally. I thought there was a way to make the part internal to the assembly only?

Re: Adding a virtual component?
Kelvin Lamport Apr 1, 2016 10:18 AM (in response to Glenn Schroeder)Oops!
In retrospect, that's what I should have said, but I was actually suggesting that he check-out the option. Thanks, Glenn.

Re: Adding a virtual component?
Anton Miller Apr 1, 2016 9:48 AM (in response to Matt Mengel)As glenn said add a new part.
but you can always just add a row in the BOM as well. although I do feel adding the part and leaving it internal to assembly is the best method for this.

Re: Adding a virtual component?
Matt Mengel Apr 1, 2016 9:54 AM (in response to Anton Miller)I'd rather not just add it to the BOM manually. I'd like to be able to edit the file properties and have them show up in the BOM.

Re: Adding a virtual component?
Matt Mengel Apr 1, 2016 10:15 AM (in response to Matt Mengel)O.K., I got it. As Glenn suggested I inserted a new part. As Kelvin showed I had the "Save new components to external file" box checked so I was prompted to do so. I saved the part on my desktop. In the assembly I then RMB on the part and selected Make Virtual. This breaks the link. I deleted the part on my desktop. I RMB on the part again and I can rename the part and open the part and edit the custom properties to be whatever I like on my BOM. Is there a more streamlined way to accomplish this or is this the standard method?
This is, in any case, what I was trying to do. Thank you everyone. Feel free to let your bosses know I said you can have the rest of the day off. Please don't let the fact that I have no authority to do so get it your way.

Re: Adding a virtual component?
Glenn Schroeder Apr 1, 2016 10:17 AM (in response to Matt Mengel)It sounds like you have it figured out. If you'll uncheck that box in Kelvin's screenshot then the next time the Part will automatically be virtual and not create an external file. Of course you can always make it external later if you want.
