Here's a challenge for all the regular visitors here: Where are there good gears to download? Good gears, with good teeth!

It's a subject I see here all too often: users working with downloaded gears with absolute dreck for gear teeth. I have yet to find one decent configurable gear in Toolbox or 3DContentCentral that has gear teeth with a proper involute tooth shape.

Unsuspecting designers without enough knowledge are putting these gears into products with dreadful results. I personally know of multiple products that have had problems due to this.

I don't want to launch into another lecture about how and why this is vital. I just want to know, are there any good gears out there?

I am not sure how to employ such in the template to make it intelligent/better.

I did take your "BLUE" gear and matched it up to :
"Equ Drvn DP & T Gear LARGE.SLDPRT"
and it looked like a good match.

I have incorporated into the model / template some "IF" "THEN" statements
So it is a bit more Robust than my previous postings.

Take a look, if you would, and see if it is more "Robust"

I broke it by selecting a 24 tooth, module 0.4mm gear (63.5 diametral pitch, and 20 deg per metric standard). Tricky problem to cover lots of sizes I imagine. Saw rebuild times of 3-45 seconds.
Seems to work for the 75 tooth module 1.

Thanks for sharing. I'll try it with some other gear sizes eventually.

I am not sure I have addressed the latest fault you have found
BUT I have taken the model and have tried my hand at making a
Robust Involute Helical Gear Generator

Note: this template is set for the User input of the following:
"Diametrical Pitch"
"Number of Teeth"
"Pressure Angle"
"Gear Thickness"

Note: I could NOT make the parameter for the Pitch in the feature "Helix-DCGTBC" or the "Helix-DCLTBC" be equal to a "GLOBAL VARIABLE"
Thus they have to be "edited in place" or in that feature so to speak.
Also Note: The only difference between the CW & the CCW gears is the parameter choice in the feature "Helix-DCGTBC" and "Helix-DCLTBC"

It may have broke because the bore was too big (See below)
I made bore .125" and it worked OK.

what is the best way to model an involute serration
Hello, Mr. Conklin;
Some fellows referred me to this post and yourself. Above is a link to a post of mine and I'm stuck rather bad, sans going out on the street & buying a 'gear in a can' program.
I like what you created, fiddled with it for a few hours and managed to bomb every time.
Obviously, either I'm attempting to input numbers that are outside of the equations capability, or am simply supplying garbage input.

Thanks Robert for this. I will definitely use this.

I added some custom properties and a property tab builder page.

Unzip the attached file to a location of your choosing
Place the Spur Gear Part.prtprp file in your Custom Property Files folder.
Open the Robust Involute Spur Gear Generator - Better 02-PTB.sldprt file
Change the numbers in the property tab, click update, then click rebuild.

A property tab interface makes it much quicker to change your model.

hi mike,

when you were drawing the spline how did you constrain it. because I am trying to make it fully defined which is not happening some how. please if you help me out. I used the same tutorial to make the gear.
I have the pressure angle, pitch dia.

I had just recently moved to up 2016 SP3 from 2014

I just clicked spline, then touched-off on the points and hit escape. It turned black.

I really like the model, it works great with standard ANSI B92.1 gears, haven't tried anything custom yet but so far the model is very "robust" thank you for the contribution.
I was wondering if you could help me out with the internal spline portion of the model I seem to be having trouble activating. I can see a sketch called DCLTBC in the model and even though I'll input info for an internal spline into the equations the model will apply it to the external spline sketch DCGTBC. What am I doing wrong?

The "DCLTBC" = "Dedendum Circle LESS THAN Base Circle" is a sketch
that is either suppressed or unsuppressed
depending on the following equation:
“DCLTBC"= iif ( ( "DedendumCircle" + ( "Fillet" * 2 ) ) > "BaseCircle" , "suppressed" , "unsuppressed" )
if Dedendum Circle +2X Fillet IS GREATER THAN BaseCircle THEN Suppress OR Unsuppress FEATURE

If it is suppressed then this one is unsuppressed etc
“DCGTBC"= iif ( ( "DedendumCircle" + ( "Fillet" * 2 ) ) > "BaseCircle" , "unsuppressed" , "suppressed" )
if Dedendum Circle +2X Fillet IS GREATER THAN BaseCircle THEN Unsuppress OR Suppress FEATURE

These IF THEN statements were added to over come the gear model "breaking" when a certain thresh hold
of teeth were input and then in the sketch the Dedendum Circle became LESS THAN or GREATER THAN the Base Circle
It was to create a branch to solve the model this way or that way. (with out breaking)
As for internal spline... Am not sure what you desire... I have only thought of this as a standard spur gear.
