Devan Depew just got an incredible deal on one.
Thanks. I had trouble finding a current thread with the latest laptops.
I guess some information is in order.
Do you have one now and what is it?
What are your goals for the laptop?
Ok, I just got a dell precision m6600 brand new for $550. It runs solidworks fantastic. and would recommend it for medium sized assemblies (up to 500 pieces) since I haven't gone above 500 yet.
the specs on mine are:
500gb hard drive
8gb ram (expandable to 32gb)
intel graphics 3000 and NVidia quadro 3000m graphics
ultrasharp 1080 display.
I use a Lenovo w540, 16Gb ram, 256Gb SSD, Nvidia Quatro K2100M graphics.
It works fine on my assemblies which consists of up to 10000 parts/assmblies.
I earlier used a HP Elitebook which was also fine.
I have a Dell m3800, Gen4 i7 quad core 2.2, 16gb ram, Quadro k1100m and 256gb ssd. It was purchased refurb w/ warranty from Dell for about $1350. At about 4.2lb it's among the lightest 15" mobile workstation and the only smaller lighter workstation I'm aware of is the HP zBook14. A friend has the HP and loves it. Neither are fast, but I have no complaints given it's not a full on workstation. It renders, solves and opens lg assemblies just fine. The Dell has complaints in the forums, so a warranty might be worth it, but mine has run fine for over a year. On common issue was the tracking pad, but I use a mouse so can't comment. Oh, I do run 1980x1020 as the 3K is wonky (but getting better) in SW and the IPS screen is as good as any win laptop screen I have seen for visual accuity, color differentiation and general ease on the eyes. Note - It will heat up if you don't give it room to breathe at the back. I do lust for, but don't really need the GoBoxx, though it's 2 to 4x the cost and considerably larger and heavier. I believe Lenovo and MSI(?) both have contenders for the small light category.
