Windows explorer crashes 2 to 3 times daily. This started after installing SW2015. The crash seems to occur only when having SW2015 open. One other person in my organization is having the same issue. Anyone heard of this? Any fixes?
I've seen explorer crash on occasion when runnign SW15. I'm currently running SP2.0EV and haven't noticed it lately.
Thanks John. I will give it a try. Currently running SP1.1
Steve: Have you tried loading sp2.0 ? Did that fix the problem?
I have this same issue Win-Explorer crashing ever since loading SW2015. It crashes several time per day, even when not running any version of SW. (I'm also running Win7pro, and SW2015 sp1.1.)
I was going to give it some time before posting. I have been running SP2.0EV for 5 days now. I haven't experienced a crash since upgrading.
How do I get SP2.0 I am also having this problem. I was in a training meeting this week "cad managers boot camp" and all 3 of the companies represented have experienced the same issue. SW14 crashed about once or twice a month on my computer, after fixing the video card driver. SW15 has not crashed at all, however explorer seams to crash several times a day.
In SW, at the top menu bar, select "Help", then "check for updates". SP2.0ev should be there.
I just loaded it. I am hopeful that this fixes the problem. Fingers crossed.... -AUC
We are at SP 2.0 but the problem still exists, we've found some kind of solution ( allthough not optimal); don't use the windows explorer preview.
The Windows explorer preview has ALWAYS been problematic, just like the search function. Using Windows explorer for anything beyond file maintenance isn't on my suggested list. I'd get EPDM.
I've been using sp2 for two days now, and explorer has not crashed since. (Was crashing 6 time a day, even when SW was not running)
Disabling explorer preview is NOT an option. I have 4 windows open at any time, use to access documents & software across multiple projects. A better solution.... How about SW implement some kind of software quality verification & validation before they pump out their buggy crap? Just an idea, doubt it will happen.... -AUC
working with sp2 now I have traded the explorer crashes for solidworks crashes.
I have not encountered this error or any of this sort. Curiously, is your computer(s) running 8g of Ram or more?
There is at least one more similar thread:
crash when open file from "open" dialogue
From that, SW are aware, so SP2.0 has to sort this... I'm still running 2014 day-to-day - having installed 2015 SP1.1 for testing - and it's a dll problem as far as I can see...
I have been working with Solidworks on this and together we have found that turning off the preview pane in Windows Explorer will stop these types of crashes. Hopefully that will help you out until the issue gets resolved with the Service pack.
Am currently running SW2015-SP4 on a good spec DELL T3610, and am experiencing Win Explorer crashes while in EPDM, plus while natively in Solidworks and checking in/out etc.
This is happening twice a day on average since the SW2015 installation.
It also happened while running a test file upgrade; the upgrade Work Instruction file wouldn't restart, leaving 50k plus files checked out which took 6 hours to get all checked back in.....that was fun.
I have contacted my VAR and am awaiting a response.......
watch this space.
I'm still getting crashes with Windows Explorer too. It crashes when previewing SW files and it crashes with preview off if I go to a folder with dwg files. Of course it's not every time.
I was having WinExplorer crashes too for a while, and it got especially bad when work upgraded me to a new laptop. But the other issue I was having, (before upgrading computers, and then much worse after) was that I lost all thumbnail icon previews and previews in the preview pane to the right in WinExplorer. At first it was only some missing icon thumbnails and previews. Turns out this was known bug which was fixed supposedly in SP4. So I upgraded, and nope, it did not fix the issue. Then that's when work got me a new computer (not because of the issue, just coincidentally). So on the brand new computer, with a fresh install of Win7 x64, and fresh install of SolidWorks 2015 SP4 (skipped any prior version so that was the only version installed or had ever been installed), I completely lost all thumbnails and previews, and the WinExplorer crashes were much worse. Plus Solidworks crashes in general were also much worse. Working with our VAR, we went through a whole bunch of re-installing, messing with drivers, settings, you name it; nothing worked. Finally my IT people blew away my entire user profile. And that finally solved the problem. You see, my IT people never do that normally, even on a brand new computer, or even when reformatting the HDD and re-installing everything from scratch. They always transfer a users profile from one computer to another. Turns out, something in my old user profile must have become corrupted, and it only kept getting worse the more times they transferred it from one place to another.
So now I finally have my previews and thumbnails back, and the WinExplorer crashes are greatly reduced (though not completely gone). However, SolidWorks crashes continue unabated and are a whole different story.
When you say Solidworks crashes, are you saying being dumped out of the software, or the Solidworks window freezes and never recovers?
80-90% of what I have experienced in 2015 over the past year are the freeze variety that never recover no matter how long you wait. The rest are the instant dumps.
here is another posting that deals with the windows freeze as you noted: Solidworks constantly Freezing up
I am working with a SolidWorks technical manager on this issue, huge for us with SW2015 sp4, have 20 users that have the same deal, and sporadic, non repeatable, does it when and if it wants to and when it does it is multiple times during the day. I am hoping to talk to someone in the programmers group shortly about other things to look for
WOW, holy crap, I had not seen that thread. Thanks! Wow this is a much bigger issue than I realized. I'm starting to feel better (in a depressing sort of way) that I'm definitely not alone.
Here is another recent thread where I describe my issues in more detail: Solidworks 2015 crashes a LOT; Why is this still an issue?
And this other thread I've been participating in starting to get interesting: Survey: how much time do you lose daily due to SWX instability?
Thanks Troy, good information for me!
Likewise, we have approx' 20 users and have suffered multiple crashes and freezes daily. Better since the new hardware, but still a regular occurrence. I've tried to impress upon the user base to have as little other applications open as possible all of the time, especially MS Office and browsers etc. And yes, a fix for many issues is a Windows profile reset.
I daren't add my voice to the 'How much time do you lose.....' survey. It would pay for a different 3D CAD system!
I've de-activated the Preview TAB in EPDM Explorer on our test system and my node, and suffering fewer crashes as a result. It isn't something I want to hit the users with as we've just upgraded......'Oh, guys, now that we have 2015, their's this problem straight away....'
I'll see what comes to me in time.
