J-Slot on a cylinder part

I am trying to create a J-Slot on a cylinder part and I am having some trouble

The way that I am trying to create this is by using a Helix for a path and then using a square profile for the sweep cut.

The problem is that I am trying to make the cut like manufacturing would do with an endmill.

A square profile cut sweep just isn't looking right because of some of the complex curves I have to make. Obviously I can clean up the squared ends with another circle extrusion to simulate an endmill diameter but it becomes a problem when the curve becomes a little more complex.

Is there are way to take a part/extrusion (shaped like an cylinder/endmill) and have it subtract along a path?

Or is there a completely different way to go about something like this.

I hope I have explained this okay.

I appreciate any help.
