Anna Wood Jun 7, 2015 12:46 PM (in response to Richard Weiss)I agree with Glenn.... The Dell UltraSharp monitors are the way to go.
Besides the IPS display, the extra pixels are nice. You essentially have a 4:3 monitor with more width.
The 1080p wide screens are great for movies, not for CAD.

Re: what are the best 24-27" flat screen monitors for SolidWorks?
Charles Culp Nov 14, 2011 2:03 PM (in response to Richard Weiss)At work I have dual Dell U2410. It is 1920x1200, 16:10 aspect ratio. This is considered "widescreen", but not quite as widescreen as an HD TV. I would not want a monitor for SolidWorks that has a wider aspect ratio than this one. The best aspect ratio, as Anna mentions would be closer to square.
At home I have a 1920x1080 16:9 Dell Ultrasharp. It is great for watching YoutubeHD, but too wide for SolidWorks.

Re: what are the best 24-27" flat screen monitors for SolidWorks?
Charles Culp Nov 14, 2011 5:19 PM (in response to Tim Cochrane)The Dell UltraSharps are expensive because they are not TFT technology, but IPS technology. IPS is short for In Plane Switching, and it is a different technology than most monitors. It is also more expensive, and a decade ago cost a few thousand dollars per monitor. Since then, the prices have come down, and for the past few years, they have finally been accessable for CAD users.
They are nice, and I am more than willing to spend the extra money, even just for my home computer. And I am very cheap.
That being said, if you don't want to spend the money, just get a nice TFT. I trust c|net for their reviews: http://reviews.cnet.com/2001-12704_7-0.html?tag=hdr;brandnav

Harold Brunt Nov 14, 2011 5:33 PM (in response to Charles Culp)This doesn't address the OP and is NOT a value priced product but I had the opportunity to see one of these last week with some simulation based renderings displayed. Nothing short of spectacular (and it should be at the price!): http://www.projectorsuperstore.com/product_details.cfm?aid=NexTag&productid=8922

Re: what are the best 24-27" flat screen monitors for SolidWorks?
Richard Weiss Nov 14, 2011 5:16 PM (in response to Richard Weiss)I have continued my search as well and, by googling 1920x1200, found two other candidates besides the Dell U2410 in the affordable price range. One is the U2412M at ~$200 less than the U2410. The reviews seem to like it (on average) though it clearly is not on quite the same level as the U2410. Another monitor, similarly priced to the U2410 is the HP LP2475W (~$525), which seems more equivalent to the U2410 with a few newer conveniences. As you have pointed out, the 16:9 aspect is not ideal (as on my ViewSonic) and therefore the 1920x1200 in a 24" should be a big improvement.
I shall have a bit more thinking to do; I'm just getting the hang of the various IPS types and what they (theoretically) offer. Thank you all for the input which is very helpful.

Richard Weiss Nov 17, 2011 3:47 PM (in response to Charles Culp)From what I researched, I think that the ASUS PA246Q is worth the first try. Best price is currently ~$490.00 when shipping, etc. is included. Virtually all the internet vendors give 25-30 days return, so it's not really a gamble. I'm looking forward to its delivery. I'll report on it (from the vantage of my not-very-technical background) sometime after Turkey Day.

Re: what are the best 24-27" flat screen monitors for SolidWorks?
Richard Weiss Mar 20, 2015 4:35 PM (in response to Richard Weiss)Now, several years later (mea culpa), I can report that the ASUS PA246Q worked out very well. I could not be more satisfied. On a different topic, I have just had to replace my graphics card (PNY nVidia Quadro 4000). Considering the cost, my use, the care taken not to allow overheating, this was a disappointing event. However, the new K series are much better and, for a user such as myself who works mostly on single parts and small assemblies, the new PNY nVidia K620, with the same memory as the old 4000, works equally as well. The cost was a very pleasant surprise @ $170.00 (vs. more than $700.00 for the 4000 in 2011).

Re: what are the best 24-27" flat screen monitors for SolidWorks?
Scott Baugh Mar 20, 2015 5:18 PM (in response to Richard Weiss)I done quite a bit of research on this last year. Here is what I found to look out for when you purchase a monitor.
LCD Panel Types:
TN (Twisted Nematic) = usually is not a good quality and are usually very inexpensive
VA (Vertical Alignment) = Medium priced, usually its a good monitor, but suffers from deep black areas
IPS (In-plane Switching) = Higher price, however some combine with PLS in regards to viewing angles. These monitors usually have a better picture and quality.
PLS (Plane-line Switching) = New Technology and there are a few using it.
Backlighting:
Always get a screen with LED backlight
WLED = is the the most common and inexpensive
RGB LED = cost more and does not allow for a slim design
Response time:
Ignore anything less 12 ms As the human eye will not see any changes.
Resolution:
I prefer the 1920 x 1080, but some might prefer a higher resolution
Connections:
DVI
HDMI
Display Port
Its important to get the right connections for your monitor so you pay attention to these.
Always check the technical information and if they don't list the Panel type its usually the TN type.
For more information check out this site - Monitors buying guide - CNET
Hope that helps,
Scott

DVI
or
HDMI
Looking at a newer ASUS 28" that I believe has only TWO HDMI connections...
I have a new system(built in May 2015).
i Just got a Quadro K5000. It has both HDMI and DVI. Two of each.
whats better?
thanks,

Those are not HDMI connections. Those are DisplayPort connections.

DisplayPort is better the DVI.

Scott Baugh Jun 8, 2015 9:03 AM (in response to Ronald Self)Which Monitor are you looking at? There are at least two 28" ASUS monitors I found online and one does have 2 HDMI ports on it.
I would go with the HDMI ported model personally.

Re: what are the best 24-27" flat screen monitors for SolidWorks?
Ronald Self Jun 18, 2015 3:49 PM (in response to Scott Baugh)hello,
I ended up getting the Asus PB287Q
It seems to be a great monitor so far. Going from a lap top to this desk top has revealed features in SolidWorks that I couldn't see on the laptop before.
With the K5000 and the Asus PB287Q it's looking good.... now to learn more about Solid Works and get more fluent with it.
Two DVI ports
Two DP or Display Ports off the Quadro K5000
The monitor have two HDMI ports and one DP Display Port.
Took some driving around but I finally got a Display Port to Display Port cable at FRY'S
With the card and this monitor it all looks great!!!! but like I said above, I need more time and training on the software.
I wrote a graphics drawing program while in HS in 1983. If you can imagine how basic it was. I was really proud of it though. I could draw, save, load, draw or change and save the drawings again. It was really COOL!!!
Now SOLID WORKS is extremely cool compared to what I had back in the day, I just need to get up to speed with it.
...and figure out the BEST way to get drawing in to my old MC 9.1 because I haven't been able to buy the MCforSW yet.
Having trouble with file transfer right now.
Thanks !!

Re: what are the best 24-27" flat screen monitors for SolidWorks?
Ryan McVay Jun 23, 2015 12:16 PM (in response to Ronald Self)Actually the DisplayPort 1.2 is "newer" technology option that actually allows you to pass multiple displays thru a single cable. This means if you have a DP 1.2 plug on your pc/laptop/workstation you can then use a single cable from the device to the monitor and then daisy chain your monitors. The newer tablet devices (yes you can run CAD on these) have the mini-DP outputs. I have a Surface Pro 3 that is running 3 monitor. The main touch screen, and 2 daisy chained Dell U2414 monitors. When I need to head to another plant or the evening I just disconnect the single cable and off I go. You need to make sure you have right number of DP ports on the first monitor in your chain.
In this image I am actually running two different CAD packages and I have separate Bluetooth mouse/keyboard that I have now (before the image was taken).
It was mentioned that a square display is better for CAD. If you wanted you could rotate these monitors 90 degrees for an great display. The thin side bezels are great side-by-size display. I was able to get hold of 14 monitors for our company. These were all "refurbished", still have full warranty and I saved about 40%!

I had a lot of trouble using a daisy chain of two monitors with DisplayPort 1.2 cables. This was with a Dell M6800 laptop, an AMD FirePro M6100, and two DellU2414H monitors. The system could not keep track of what monitors should be on, particularly when undocking and docking the laptop. Monitors would go to sleep and not wake up. At one point I had a monitor flashing off to sleep and back on. I worked with Dell service, who told me to switch one monitor to DVI. This at first gave the wrong size image in the monitor (correct resolution, wrong size), but we fixed that and everything is working well now.

Re: what are the best 24-27" flat screen monitors for SolidWorks?
Stefan Moran Aug 20, 2015 12:28 AM (in response to Richard Weiss)Happy to have found this thread as I'm currently in the market for a couple of new monitors for my workstation. However just out of curiosity why is a square aspect ration of 4:3 more favorable to CAD work vs the 16:9. My current 22" Samsung is a 16:10 ratio and I have found it fine for my CAD work. I can see the relevance if you usually model parts that follow closer to a 4:3 ration, but if the part you model is long such as a conveyor systems or extrusion machinery the 16:9 would be more ideal. Just trying to understand the logic behind the statement so I can make an informed decision once I purchase.
Thanks!!

Re: what are the best 24-27" flat screen monitors for SolidWorks?
Erik Bilello Aug 20, 2015 6:23 AM (in response to Stefan Moran)Stephan,
I presume it's because most people leave their computer configured in the "default" manner, the Windows taskbar on the bottom and the SW Commandmanager on top. See the picture Ryan has posted above. This leaves a wide, but short window to work in. At home I have a Dell U2711, it's very nice, (Keep an eye out and you can find Ultra Sharp monitors on sale at reasonable prices). I have moved my taskbar to the left side and leave the Commandmanager minimized with the toolbars I use most parked on the left and right sides, this leaves a very reasonable working area, it works quite well, for me. As you point out, the idea aspect ratio could be determined by what you are doing, so i wouldn't worry too much about others personal preferences if you are doing not so common work.

Re: what are the best 24-27" flat screen monitors for SolidWorks?
Ian McLean Aug 21, 2015 1:23 AM (in response to Erik Bilello)I am hoping to get a new monitor soon.
I am personally keen on 32" 1440p monitors because they are typically not much more expensive than 27" and 28" 1440p monitors.
I find 1080p 24" monitors to have too little vertical resolution, even with taskbar set to auto hide.
This is because I have font scaling set to 125% in Windows.
This messes with dialogue boxes in Solidworks a bit, and stretches some menus below edge of screen, but to me is preferable to straining to see small text. The default font scaling in windows results in text that is physically 33% smaller on a 24" 1080p monitor than an old 17" 1024x768 monitor common a decade ago.
So 125% scaling adjusts fonts up to the same size I was using 10 years ago.
A 1440p 27" monitor would require 150% scaling to get font the same size.
A 32" 1440p monitor will have same size text as a 1080p 24" at the same font scaling of 125%, but with 33% more vertical resolution menus will fit OK.As an added bonus, the VA panels used in 32" 1440p monitors have much better contrast ratios than IPS panels common in 27" and 28" 1440p panels. This is good for me, because my workstation is beside a full height window, so I need good contrast and brightness to avoid eyestrain.

Re: what are the best 24-27" flat screen monitors for SolidWorks?
Andy Sanders Jan 15, 2016 11:53 AM (in response to Bob Van Dick)If you're not seeing round holes, my guess is that you have the resolution set incorrectly for your aspect ratio.
Check to see what your native resolution is for your monitor and set it to that. I bet all will be round again ;-)

Re: what are the best 24-27" flat screen monitors for SolidWorks?
Alec Travis-Daugherty Nov 16, 2017 3:38 PM (in response to Richard Weiss)Now that we are near the end of 2017, what would everyone suggest now?
Ive been having trouble with my monitor (Planar IX2850 28"). I want to be able to run higher resolution without losing my refresh ability. I hate having the jumpy mouse movement at high resolution. I'm not sure if I want to go dual monitor. I do some rendering here and there when a customer would benefit from it but it is not my primary focus. I do tend to have large assemblies though.
I Noticed that a lot of people suggested Dual Dell 24" ultrasharp U2410. Is this still a pick? This seems a little old and money isn't an option to get a new one so What do you guys think is the best 2017 setup?

Re: what are the best 24-27" flat screen monitors for SolidWorks?
Stefan Moran Dec 11, 2017 3:11 PM (in response to Alec Travis-Daugherty)At work I'm working with duel Dell P2314Ht monitors.
Dell 23 Monitor – P2314H Professional | Dell
They aren't high end in any way shape or form but work very well regardless. No longer available from Dell directly you can find them around for about $180 at this time, so resonable for a duel setup for any monitor. Max rez is 1920 x 1080 at 60 Hz, 1 x D-port, 1 x DVI-D and 1 x VGA.
I believe it's replaced now by the P2317H if you want something more recent, but I would expect you'll add another +/- $300 total for a duel setup.
Dell 23 Monitor: P2317H | Dell
I'm also looking to upgrade my home setup, but there I'll most certainly be going with a single wide monitor. Looking into the 27" to 32" size at 2560x 1440 rez range. There are some very affordable prices out there for Dells, LGs and Samsungs, but youll end up with the same 1920x1080 resolution as my work 23" monitors so don't expect crisp anything at those sizes for anything under the $300 mark, $400 to $500 seems to be the sweet spot at this time for the 27" to 32" 2560x1440.
Happy shopping.

Re: what are the best 24-27" flat screen monitors for SolidWorks?
David Sloop Dec 14, 2017 9:51 AM (in response to Richard Weiss)We are upgrading our computers. We have Boxx Apexx computer spec'd and bought thru our VAR. We got one to try out first, and we ended up getting a 24" monitor to go with it.
We bought a AOC 2476WM
First thing I noticed is how light and flimsy it felt compared to my old Dell.
I can see why they bought this monitor. It is cheap. $243 at Newegg, I've heard it has sold elsewhere for $100.
Found some reviews on Newegg, and see a few mentions of bad pixels, and/or lines on the screen within a year or two of use.
I'll be checking out some of these suggestions, but am not sure if I'll talk purchasing into one of these $500 monitors over this one at such a cheap price.
