If you are looking to be able to draw on it, I suppose you should create a drawing from the imported model. This should work ok unless the files you have imported are made from surfaces instead of solid geometry. There may be settings to help with that when you are doing the initial import into SW. If there are surfaces, they will not show in the drawing because a surface is infinitely thin. When you create the drawing there is a setting to import surface geometry when creating a drawing view.

I think I figured out the problem or the root cause anyway
The part files I've been using were iges files
and I have tried to make a print from them but when I went for a distance between 2 holes it could not identify the holes or the center points.
I ended up having to convert it to a DWG before I could get any information from them.
