# Can you put a jog in the extension line of a linear dimension?

Is it possible to put a jog in the extension line of a linear dimension? (I need to jog out around a hole so that it is clear this is not the hole dimension.) How do you do it?

Thanks,
Carrie

Carrie,

As an accepted ASME practice you may want to look at "Slanted Dimensions". Hover your cursor over the end of an extension line and the feedback cursor will change to indicate that you can select and drag to create a slanted dimension.

I guess I will just have to pull a bunch more detail views to get what I want, because I do not like what putting a slanted dimension in does to the looks of the view.

Yea, I figured you'd say something like that.

Sorry Carrie, it is the only method I know of to get around things or make the drawing less congested.

We only use slants rarely and when we do there is always someone who says they don't understand or that it looks dumb or some other thing. I just point to the drawing standards we follow it and it legal.

I just though of one other thing:

Could you just pull your dimension off in the opposite direction to avoid the hole?

Hide the hole in the detail view and add the following caption:

DETAIL K
SCALE 4:1
(FLOW HOLE REMOVE FROM VIEW
TO CLARIFY DIMENSIONING SCHEME.)

You could sketch the lines then dimension to the line.

What I do is sketch lines around the hole and constrain the start and ending sketch lines coincident with the object line. Dimension to the end of the last line at it's end point closest to the object. That wat the dimension will change along with the surface.

Jogs in extension lines is a feature planned for SW2009.
