David Beard Sep 4, 2014 9:10 AM (in response to Jim Wilkinson)Is there a way, when placing item balloons for a BOM, to tell Solidworks you want to balloon a subassembly and not a part within the assembly?

I don't work with BOMs all that much, but I seem to recall that a workaround was to select the origin of the subassembly in the feature tree.

David Beard Sep 4, 2014 4:29 PM (in response to Jerry Steiger)Jerry,
Thanks very much. Something close to that works: I can get origins and coordinate systems to temporarily display in my assembly views and pick on them when I start the balloon leader. It gets the leader close to where I want it. It's not perfect but it beats overriding the balloon text with "Text" (manual) because it's easy tomiss some balloons after re-numbering items.
I cant pick from the feature tree: once I start the balloon command, SW will only let me pick in a view or on the sheet.
Dave
