Re: Shell Definitions keep disappearing
Bill McEachern Sep 30, 2013 5:49 PM (in response to Chris Ross)Yeah shells have some issues on updating. You could try using different configuration when you make amod to the shell's geometry. Then duplicate the study into the new config and see if most of the shell definitions carry across - might work. Or use a drag and drop on the shell definitions.

Re: Shell Definitions keep disappearing
Jared Conway Sep 30, 2013 5:56 PM (in response to Chris Ross)what do you edit when you say you edit the necessary items?
sheetmetal would definitely be the way to go if you can confirm your workflow is a limitation or bug. did you get an eSPR/SPR for it?
i should note, that i have seen what you describe but i don't think i've ever heard of it as a defined workflow limitation. bills workaround is clever and might work.

Re: Shell Definitions keep disappearing
Chris Ross Sep 30, 2013 7:28 PM (in response to Jared Conway)Editing can be as simple as altering the thickness of a gusset to relocating a beam or adding a new beam. Extreme would be changing the size of a beam. It all depends on what the analysis shows.

Re: Shell Definitions keep disappearing
Jared Conway Sep 30, 2013 7:40 PM (in response to Chris Ross)does it happen on smaller scale test assemblies?

Chris Ross Sep 30, 2013 8:21 PM (in response to Jared Conway)Yep.

Re: Shell Definitions keep disappearing
Jared Conway Oct 1, 2013 4:02 AM (in response to Chris Ross)If that is the case , sheet metal sounds like the way to go.
Make sure you get an spr or espr for the issue so that future versions don't do that.

Re: Shell Definitions keep disappearing
Zagros Lalo Jan 28, 2014 6:43 AM (in response to Jared Conway)Hi Jared
I think Solidworks team should find a solution for this otherwise it is extremely frustrating and costly for us as engineers to keep inputting so much data knowing that if you make any change you will lose it and have to start all over again .. and we have to make sure that the data is correct every time; otherwise your analysis will be useless..
My suggestion to solve this problem is this.. (This has to be done by Solidworks Team of course I hope)
1. At the modelling stage there should be a default value for inputting thickness for Surface bodies
2. The default thickness should only be activated when requires.. either to thicken the body or used for the shell element thickness during FEA.
3. This will be ideal if it is tabulated in an Excel Table (or Solidworks table) which will make it easier to change the default values for each surface body.. Instead of right licking and choosing from a menu which is very time consuming and frustrating (and will minimize Errors)
I hope Solidworks can incorporate this functionality in the software because currently it is a really difficult to use it the way it is.
Kind Regards

Re: Shell Definitions keep disappearing
Jared Conway Feb 6, 2014 3:20 AM (in response to Zagros Lalo)Isn't that basically like using sheet metal? You would also get the automatic bonding.

Re: Shell Definitions keep disappearing
Zagros Lalo Feb 6, 2014 9:52 AM (in response to Jared Conway)1) Solidworks 2013 (x64) Premium SP3.0
2) It happens even when a small change is done in the model. Thickness and Material Properties disappear for most the Surface bodies.
3) Sheet metal might solve it, but usually you do not want to remodel all the part from scratch especially when you have done a lot of work on it already.
4) It is more convenient to use Surface bodies in our case than Sheet metal.
5) To be able to thicken a Surface body using a default thickness value makes SolidWorks even more powerful.-
Re: Shell Definitions keep disappearing
Jared Conway Feb 6, 2014 10:29 AM (in response to Zagros Lalo)It sounds like a good enhancement. I can think of ways I can use it.
But if it is happening on the simplest if surfaces with the simplest of changes, swx should be able to handle that and you should get an spr (bug) from your reseller.

Re: Shell Definitions keep disappearing
Zagros Lalo Feb 6, 2014 11:01 AM (in response to Jared Conway)That applies to Surface Body thickness and Material property .
I hope we can see some progress on this at last..

Re: Shell Definitions keep disappearing
Jared Conway Feb 6, 2014 11:20 AM (in response to Zagros Lalo)first step is to get an SPR for the bug and then an eSPR for your enhancement. then we can all add votes for them to move them up the development priority list. if this is killing you on a day to day basis, i would highly recommend talking to your var about escalating it.

Re: Shell Definitions keep disappearing
Zagros Lalo Feb 7, 2014 2:32 AM (in response to Jared Conway)I am not familiar with raising an SPR and eSPR .. If you like to do it at your end we would appreciate it .. if not please let me know how it could be done.
Thank you

Re: Shell Definitions keep disappearing
Alessandro Tornincasa Feb 7, 2014 8:56 AM (in response to Zagros Lalo)Zagros,
you'll have to prepare an example with a reproducible workflow that causes the issue.
For example you should send your var a zip file containing your model in its working state, then list the steps to reproduce the issue that makes your model lose shell definitions.
You VAR will then contact developers to submit issue. If they will recognize a bug they will open an SPR with a specific number.
After that you can ask your VAR to escalate the issue, which is provide you business impact in terms of lost money and time.
This is likely to give more priority to that bug in the SolidWorks "to be fixed" list.
Cheers,
Alessandro

Re: Shell Definitions keep disappearing
Jared Conway Feb 7, 2014 11:48 AM (in response to Alessandro Tornincasa)enhancements can be submit through customerportal.solidworks.com
but i like to confirm that it isn't a bug before submitting an ER.
