Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
1-A5CHD1 Aug 11, 2009 8:32 AM (in response to David Diehl)Yes.
If you're using the SMTP for EPDMs messaging system, you'll notice that links in the email start with "conisio://". The protocol is registered on client machines, so a user will have to have the EPDM client installed for the links to work.
The links have the following format:
conisio://vaultname/explore?projectid=856&documentid=45998&objecttype=1
It will also take some ingenuity to get the various ID's of the items required for the link. If you'd like I'll write a plugin that will allow you to copy a link for a selected item to the clipboard.

Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
David Diehl Aug 11, 2009 9:01 AM (in response to 1-A5CHD1)Lee,
Thank you for the quick response. We do use SMTP for our EPDM messages and I can see the conisio://vaultname/open?.....link. When I added this link to our MS Word DHF index file and then clicked on it, it went straight to the document in the vault and opened in exactly the manner I was looking for.
At this point, I really don't know how to obtain the information that makes up the link such as the projectid, documentid, etc
(Example: open?projectid=1014&documentid=86270&objecttype=1). A plugin that would copy that information to the clipboard so that I could then add the link to the WORD document would fantastic! So, if you can write the plugin, that would be great!
Thanks again,
Dave

Patrick Poh Nov 5, 2009 3:19 PM (in response to Joy Garon)is there anyway to get this modified so instead of having conisio://vault_name/explore?projectid=1308&documentid=1445&objecttype=1 to have it generate the link with the view command - such as conisio://vault_name/view?projectid=1308&documentid=1445&objecttype=1

Multi-select (ctrl-click) both files at the same time before clicking open. A VB .Net add-in consist of the add-in dll and an Interop.EdmLib.dll file, so you need to select both to load it.

I tried installing the copy shortcut addin. It appeared to load OK (see attached screen shot). There is a "Copy as shortcut" item in the right click menu. However, if I try to paste the shortcut into a windows application (Outlook, Word etc), th pase option is not available. Using "Paste special" only gives me the option of HTML format, but nothing gets pasted. Did something in Enterprise change so that this no longer works. I am running Enterprise 2012 SP2 on Windows 7 64-bit

It will copy both files and folders and you can do a multi select. When you "paste" the links, files will have the full file name (ex. Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
David Diehl Aug 20, 2009 2:58 PM (in response to David Diehl)Taking this one step further.
Our "use case" for this is that we maintain an MS Word file for our Design History File Index (DHFI). Before EPDM, our project coordinator manually created the file which was very time consuming. At regular stages in our design control process, this MS Word file is reviewed, approved and Rev-controlled.
Now, with what we are proposing with EPDM, we are getting very close to being able to automatically create our DHFI which would be a tremendous time saver.
With EPDM, we would do the following:
1. Perform a search on our Product's DHF files located in EPDM. Our search columns are configured to match our existing DHFI. (Data cards have been configured to record the information that we include in our DHFI).
2. Export the search results out to an Excel Spreadsheet
3. Using the "Copy as shortcut" add-in, we insert the hyperlink into the appropriate cell of the spreadsheet for each document to enable a viewer of our Design History File Index to click on any document that is listed and go straight to the EPDM vault and open the file.
Step 3 above is still a manual and time-consuming process since our DHFI may have hundreds of documents listed. Every time we needed to create a new revision of the DHFI, we would have to go back and regenerate new links since the documents themselves may have been revised and the link would need to point to the latest revision of the document.
So, (and I am sorry for the long set-up to this)....Is there a way to add a variable to our data card (read-only) such as "File Hyperlink" that would extract the same hyperlink information that the "Copy as shortcut" add-in is generating. If we could extract that, then we we do a search to generate our Excel file, we would add the column "File Hyperlink" and this would get exported out to excel and we would eliminate the manual step of copying the links.
Thanks,
Dave

Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
1-A5CHD1 Aug 20, 2009 3:46 PM (in response to David Diehl)Add the variable 'FileHyperlink' to your file cards. Add the attached add-in. Upon checkin, the add-in will write the string you're looking for to the variable. You can then use the Hyperlink() function in Excel to format the cell. (It would nice if Dispatch or EPDM gave access to the file and folder id's natively, but unless I am missing something, an add-in is the only way to do this.)

Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
David Ouellette Sep 4, 2012 9:19 AM (in response to Brett Cochran)The file in EPDM is encrypted and stored by a unique directory/folder number and file number. The link used, as was posted earlier conisio://vaultname/explore?projectid=856&documentid=45998&objecttype=1 but this opens a link to the folder. I tried to modifiy the "explore" to "view". It worked but the addin needed to be rebuilt so it could get added into EPDM with the administrator tool. It only opened the file in the built in viewer in EPDM. I then modified the line to "open" and rebuilt the addin. The link will now open any file in EPDM with the default application. The two dlls are attached. These can be used to link to any file in EPDM. The user has to have the EPDM client installed. Thanks to all that contributed. Please post any issues or success.

Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
Brett Cochran Sep 5, 2012 1:19 PM (in response to David Ouellette)I'm trying to get the project FOLDER to open. I know how to link to specific files in EPDM.
When I open EPDM and the project folder is displayed, I can shift+right click the folder and click "Copy as Path" to get the folder path. I then paste this folder path into share point so that it looks like this:
file://C:/VaultName/ProjectsFolder/ProjectsName
I click ok to apply this link in the sharepoint entry and am returned to the sharepoint entry viewer page. However, clicking the hyperlink I just created does nothing. I don't get transfered to a 404 or 403 page, no blank tab opens, no error pops up....nothing happens at all (unless I am killing kittens randomly on the other side of the world every time I click it...sorry kitties).

Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
David Ouellette Sep 5, 2012 1:49 PM (in response to Brett Cochran)Brett,
The original addin post will open the file location in the vault. If you wanted to link to a project folder you could link to any file in the folder and the contents of the folder would come up. Like opening the folder in explorer. The link conisio://vaultname/explore?projectid=856&documentid=45998&objecttype=1 is generated by the original posted addin and opens the file location.
If you change Explore? to View?, it opens the file in the EPDM FileView. If you change it to Open? if opens the file in the application defined for the file type, Ex Solidworks for .slddrw. I tried using the addin to link to the folder itself and it does not work. It may work with some more tweaking.

Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
Tor IverothSep 6, 2012 12:32 PM (in response to David Ouellette)
Hi guys.
the examples discussed above rely on using the "Conisio://" HTML links, similar to what links in Enterprise PDM notifications are using. What happens behind the scenes is that when an EPDM client is installed, we register the "Conisio://" as an URL protocol in the registry. When the link is clicked the URL will launch an executable called "ConisioURL.exe" with some arguments, such as what File ID it is supposed to handle and what action it should do (open, browse to etc).
The ConisioURL application is only designed to process files, not folders, so it cannot be used as a "project" browse to link unless there is a file involved.
If you want an alternative approach to sending links to EPDM files or folders, I made a small API application example that is available in Knowledge Base solution S-051851. It is essentially an exe application that also registers a custom URL protocol, but you can feed it with filepath to folder or file instead of having to use the DocumentID's. Worth a try if you are into this stuff

Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
Martin Solem Aug 20, 2013 9:45 AM (in response to Tor Iveroth)Hi everyone, this thread was really helpful, i now wonder:
Is the possibilities with ConisioURL.exe written in a document somewhere?
Like what arguments it can handle?
I'm looking for something that can set a static hyperlink to a specific version of a document.
-
Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
Tor IverothAug 20, 2013 1:22 PM (in response to Martin Solem)
Hi Martin,
the ConisioURL.exe is fairly restricted in what arguments it can take. Its used internally by the various links you have in EPDM notifications, so the use cases are those same ones that notifications support.
You can find more details on the arguments supported in KB solution S-018024.
In short these are the arguments available:
open – Opens the file in associated application
view – Opens the configured “Viewer” application for the file
explore – Opens an explorer window in the folder the file resides and selects the file
get – Triggers a Get of the file to the local file vault view
lock – Checks out the file
properties – Brings up the file properties
history – Brings up the file history
And now that I look closer at the get command, it seems you can actually feed the argument with a version number as well.
So the URL to get a specific version of a file would be:
conisio://{VAULTNAME}/get?projectid={PROJECTID}&documentid={DOCUMENTID}&objecttype=1&version={VERSION}
where (without the brackets):
{VAULTNAME} = Name of the vault
{PROJECTID} = ProjectID of folder containing file
{DOCUMENTID} = DocumentID of the file
{VERSION} = Version to get

Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
Martin Solem Aug 21, 2013 2:33 AM (in response to Tor Iveroth)Tor,
Thank you so much, this is fantastic stuff!
I have tested with both Get and Open, and Get will get the file you need, always.
Open, however, will be confused if the version you try open differ from the version you have cached and the latest. If you have cached version 4, the hyperlink wants to Open version 8, and the vault contains 10 versions, you will be warned that there is a newer version of the file in the vault, and whether you want to get it. If you choose No, you will keep version 4, if you choose Yes, you will get version 10.
Best Regards
Martin

Dale Bethwaite Feb 16, 2016 10:32 PM (in response to Charley Saint)Hi Charley, I just downloaded to test but I get the "The Archive Server could not open the Windows Registry" error. Is this related to the IEdmFile as per the following thread? EPDM add-in installation problem

Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
Dale Bethwaite Feb 17, 2016 4:39 PM (in response to Charley Saint)Thanks, that imports and gives me a menu option as it should. However the "Copy as shortcut" button doesn't copy anything to the clipboard (same result after removing any non-essential addins and importing again, plus testing on a different user / computer). Don't go to any effort to fix it if its just me having issues though, I have another addin that will do the job (its just a little awkward and over-complicated).

Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
Charley Saint Feb 17, 2016 7:11 PM (in response to Dale Bethwaite)I loaded it up and get the same issue, no idea why as it appears to generate the link correctly. Might just be a problem with accessing the clipboard.

Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
Dale Bethwaite Feb 17, 2016 7:43 PM (in response to Charley Saint)That works Charley, although the links generated are to "explore" and in html format. I'm after just the plain conisio url with "open" (I realise I hadn't clarified that). If you're able to adjust it to do that then that would be awesome but if not no worries.

Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
Dale Bethwaite Mar 3, 2016 9:53 PM (in response to Charley Saint)Sorry mate, its still producing html links rather then the plain url:
Currently generates: <a href="conisio://Example Vault/open?projectid=1041&documentid=64454&objecttype=1">Example.pdf</a>
Would prefer: conisio://Example Vault/open?projectid=1041&documentid=64454&objecttype=1

Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
Charley Saint Mar 4, 2016 11:29 AM (in response to Dale Bethwaite)Here's the files, sorry I can't get you a cex this time but I upgraded my test environment to 2016 SP2 to start running some upgrade testing. You should be able to remove the old and add the new files in the add-in if you open it in the admin tool though.

Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
Tim Webb Feb 17, 2016 10:28 AM (in response to Charley Saint)Charley,
Load the addin into your vault and just export the addin so these guys can import it. Then zip that export file and upload it here. Then the users who want it can import it into their vault. I've run into this error many many times and it makes me nauseous. The only fix is to export it. Everyone will be able to import it and no functionality will be lost, plus no errors opening the registry.

Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
Shane Suffolk Mar 31, 2016 11:44 PM (in response to David Diehl)Hello all,
thanks for all the great info on hyperlinks. I've got the add-in working and it copies the doc and project ID beautifully.
However, I seem to have an issue with checking Word files (docm and docx only, Word 2010, PDM 2016) in after I've added a hyperlink to a file in the vault.
So, I can check a docx and docm file in and out without any issues but as soon as I add a hyperlink to such a file and check it in, I get an error window saying "An unknown error has occurred" and it then doesn't display the check-in window blocking me from checking in the file.
I initially thought it might be the PDM Office Add-In but when I save the hyperlinked file, close Word and check in via Windows Explorer I do get the check in window but the same error appears there and the check in button is greyed out.
Doc file and Excel files (all Office 2010) can be hyperlinked and checked in without issues.
Anybody got an idea?

Re: Can you access files in EPDM via a hyperlink address?
Jason Capriotti Apr 1, 2016 10:13 AM (in response to Shane Suffolk)Ask your VAR to add you to SPR 467376....this has been a problem for Word 2007 docx files for many many .....too many years. We still just use Word doc file formats for our templates because of it.
Some of these issues persist for far too long. I first reported it to my VAR in 2011 and was giving this SPR as a known issue......that's 5 years ago and it existed already. Looking at the date of other service requests I had and the SPR number given.....I'd estimate that this SPR was created toward the end of 2008. So 8 years later.....still not fixed.

Shane Suffolk Apr 3, 2016 7:15 PM (in response to Jason Capriotti)Thanks for that, Jason. That is indeed a ridiculously long time......
Right, so that leave me with converting my docm files to doc.........
