Kevin De Smet Feb 1, 2013 3:30 AM (in response to Amin Eldemerdash)Could you post the .STL so we can have a go?

Deepak Gupta Feb 1, 2013 4:10 AM (in response to Amin Eldemerdash)Welcome to SolidWorks forums Amin.
Try the method suggested by Charles here: How to import large STL files (or any mesh)

The charles post was not too related, I already check it.

Re: Importing .STL file and creating a solid surface for FEA analysis...
Kevin De Smet Feb 1, 2013 2:30 PM (in response to Amin Eldemerdash)I was successful in making a solid, I did have to remove a little bit of bone hanging off one of the sides, it collapsed into what would effectively have been zero thickness.

Amin Eldemerdash Feb 1, 2013 3:01 PM (in response to Kevin De Smet)thats perfect kevin, that is exactly how I want them. What were the steps that you did in importing and forming the solid??
Also, can SW export as an AscII STL?

Re: Importing .STL file and creating a solid surface for FEA analysis...
Kevin De Smet Feb 2, 2013 6:35 AM (in response to Amin Eldemerdash)I made sure my mesh was smoothed first, I put the smoothing slider on maximum in the Mesh Prep Wizard and I went through the wizard about three times. It will keep smoothing it after each time!
Then I went into the Mesh Prep Wizard again, to cut away the tiny bit of hanging triangles that were that bit of bone. I made sure I filled in the holes I created by deleting those triangles before exiting the Mesh Prep Wizard for the final time.
Then I used Automatic Creation in the Surface Wizard and put the number of patches slider fairly high but not all the way, I had about 70 erroneous surface patches. I had to use Add Feature Lines mainly along the side of the mesh, I put them vertically connecting the top and bottom. I put in about 6 across at roughly equal spacing from each other.

Re: Importing .STL file and creating a solid surface for FEA analysis...
Amin Eldemerdash Feb 2, 2013 1:17 PM (in response to Kevin De Smet)OK, usually at the end of the surface wizard is done, I get a mesh without the solid body for some of the other parts, and I can just see its shade without the actually body...is there a way to get around that?

Re: Importing .STL file and creating a solid surface for FEA analysis...
Aaron Baumgartner Feb 1, 2013 10:11 AM (in response to Amin Eldemerdash)SW lacks the ability to import large stl files as solid or surface bodies. i deal with importing stl files on a regular basis. If the file size is about 900k the standard sw way will work. if its larger than say 1mb then you will only get the graphics body. the only way i know of to make it smaller is to take it in a program like z-brush and decimate the file (in your case a lot)
