Parametrization of the model

Hi,

Today i have a kind of "best-practice" question. Before i ask my question let me give you a little bit of background:

We develop a SolidWorks add-in that we use to transfer SolidWorks-models into our own proprietary format. By now we have a version that is able to successfully transfer the triangulation data into our own format. Now we want to make it possible to parametrize the SolidWorks-model in our own tool, send the parameters back to SolidWorks and store the parameters either in the assembly-document or directly in the PDM-system.

The parameters can be categorized into two groups:

1. Category one are parameters that should be common to all instances (for example the color)

2. Category two are parameters that are specific for one instance (an example would be the size)

How would you tackle this problem? I have an idea how this could be done but i would like to hear what the experts are thinking...

Thanks in advance,

Christoph
