hi,
i need to simulate a study where a steel rope to be wounded over a drum, with one end of the steel rope fixed in the drum by providing a slot, and the free end of the rope carring a load.
my main concern is to find the stress distribution over the drum, due to load in the rope.
awaiting for reply.
Hi Dan
The problem is that a steel (or any other) rope has different properties in different directions. It is very stiff in extension but not in bending. When it is curved over a drum, it will be stiff tangentially to the drum but not radially. I very much doubt that this can be simulated in SW, even in more specialized FEM products this would present a challenge. One possibility could be to represent the rope as an evenly distributed pressure on the drum, however this will not take friction in to account and will at best give you a rough estimate.
