Hi Brandon
I was trying to find out exactly the same question yesterday,
At present we can import DSTV files into SolidWorks and this will produce a part with correct thickness etc.
However i was looking to save parts to DSTV format.
I have contacted my VAR to see if he can help, when he gets back to me i will let you know what he has said.
Thanks
Mark (SolidWorks 2010 SP2.1)
Brian,
Right now we are looking at a software called CMS that is an add-in for Solidworks. That is the best solution we have found so far. We are still in the early stages though and have a demo set up for later in the week.

Hi,
This is a 9 year old post but I am still looking for something that will convert parts into DSTV / NC1 data.
Is anyone using any of these products listed in this thread I am interested in knowing if you can import a assembly step file into SolidWorks then covert it to a weldment and have the multiple parts exported as individual DSTV or NC1 files.
Thanks
Mark
Hi Mark,
I work at a steel fab shop and we get DSTV / .nc1 files from our Tekla Detailers almost exclusively (they also give us the .dxf files for our cnc burning machines but I find that importing a DSTV, or .nc1 as they come thru, as working alot better, i.e. quantities etc import right into our burning software). I've tested out for a month the CMS software and had alot of correspondence with a guy over there. I believe the software was quite expensive and I couldn't justify going higher up to get approval to buy (see attached), but I was able to take develop a structural part in SW then export it to a DSTV (see attached). This was back in 2018. I did find a few flaws with the CMS software which I can embellish on if needed (limitations, etc). Basically, you save the model in standard .sldprt format then open CMS which is a plug-in within SW and choose to import I think.
I'm wondering if #TASK is ever planning to do something with this request. Their stuff for what I do is awesome
Forgot to mention that we use Peddimat for our Peddinghaus drill line. Until something better comes out, I'm still programming using their software, its basic and a slow process but it works. Been using it to develop DSTV's for the beam line for over 10 years. As of yet, I still cannot import an .nc1 / DSTV file into Solidworks if the detailer for some reason supplies over this format instead of both the .dxf and DSTV.
Hi Dave,
Your work flow looks the same as mine, we have our own draughting department who use Tekla, which can produce DSTV / NC1 files, these are then imported in to our Beam Drill and burning software.
We recently received an assembly that was created in Inventor and saved out as STEP file, I can import this in to SolidWorks and covert to a weldment or a SolidWorks assembly, but what I wanted to do is save all the parts out as DSTV files. We couldn't import the STEP file back in to Tekla as the model has no properties.
I looked at CMS a few years ago and found it couldn't do what we required, so was hoping there was some other software now on the market
In regard to importing DSTV / NC1 files in to SolidWorks this is possible as we have been able to do this from when we first started using SolidWorks. This import function was created by one of our VAR technicians before we bought the software and came at an additional cost so you might want o contact your VAR to see if they can also create this import function.
Regards
Mark
Hi Mark,
I've send an email to my VAR requesting any info from them on the importing / opening of such a file into Solidworks. That's interesting that you have had that ability for years. I didn't know it was possible. There have been many times when I only had a DSTV file available but no .dxf or .step or anything else so had to start from scratch as the DSTV was of no use within SW. Thanks for the heads up!
Hi Mark,
This works awesome for plate .nc1 (DSTV) files. See below. However, I also get files with this same file extension for beam line files (used with our Peddinghaus drill line for structural) and this macro appears to not work. Thanks a ton for the macro though, it works great for plate! I'm not sure how it could work for importing structural .nc1 files in SW though. Probably the way SW interprets the data from the file. I've attached both .nc1 files for reference.
For a plate .nc1 file: (brings into SW perfect with extruded thickness as well which is nice)
For a structural .nc1 file: (only brings in a 2d plate sketch - I selected TOP PLANE prior to running macro for the file):
My Peddimat software I use for sawing/drilling on our Peddinghaus makes it look like this when importing the DSTV: (shows it as a W8x24 beam)
Hi Brandon, I might be a little late to the party, but our company has developed a DSTV Translator for SolidWorks,
Check it out here:
Hi Prasad,
Do you need to buy the full IC3D package to be able to create the DSTV files or is the DSTV convertor a stand alone product.
Looking at the video I get the impression that frame etc would need to made using the IC3D package and not the SolidWorks weldment function.
I think most people would want something that would convert weldment profiles, section / plate etc to DSTV without having to purchase a full frame generator add on.
Having said that the work flow looks good and looking at videos on YouTube the bracket connections / bolts looks a lot better than SolidWorks weldments.
How much is a licence?
Thanks
Mark
Hello Mark,
The DSTV Translator module (and a Structural Steel BIM module which will be announced shortly) are included in the same installer but they are licensed and activated independently of each other. So you do not need the full package.
The DSTV Translator module is about to go into Beta release. While it’s in Beta it will be free to use! It’s a full release, and it’s not time-locked as we want as many people as possible to use it.
Right now we don’t support Weldment parts that comprise more than one body per feature but we are working to add that capability.
I am happy to contact you directly with regards to pricing.
Kind regards,
Prasad Bhonsule
Hi Prasad,
I will wait until the Beta Translator is available and I have had a chance to test it before contacting you on price.
Will you post the link to the Beta Translator here or do I need to go to a web site?
Also can I assume that you can convert as well as weldment section parts single body part files to DSTV. I.e. plate.
And can you convert sheet metal parts to DSTV in particular flat patterns?
Thanks
Mark
Hi guys,
I see a few mentions of CMS for Solidworks here and just wanted to let you know we actually have a webinar coming up on this on the 14th: StrucSoft Solutions | Webinar: Produce DSTV files with CMS for SolidWorks . It's open to all and if you can't attend, please just register and we will be sure to send you a recording.
Sincerely,
