# 2D sketch and one plane : how to win the jackpot with tail and head ?

Guys who wrote this fantastic program are teasing, but as a plane has 2 faces, how can I flip easily a 2D sketch which I just redefined its plane (if the orientation isn't the good one) ?

Philippe,

Try using the Move, Copy, Rotate, commands in the sketch toolbar.

MOVE, COPY

Hi,

and tx for replying, but a rotation isn't a symetry.

I learnt that when I was younger.

And you will ever NOT get a symetry, composing rotations and translations (when the space has an even dimension).

I learnt that when I was less younger, but I learnt it too.

It's incredible that such fantastic program don't ask what orientation has to be choosen for the source plane, but it's a reality !!!

Yes I would agree that those commands I mentioned do not give you

symetry, but they can orientate your sketch to prepare for symetry.

What about the mirror command in conjuction with the ones I mentioned before.

If the Move, Copy, Rotate commands don't fit your situation, another option would be to sketch a construction line down the center of your sketch, use it to mirror the original sketch entites, then go back and delete them.

A plane does not have two "faces" but is two dimensional.

Rarther than "flip a 2D sketch" by "redefined its plane" copy your sketch to the clipboard, then start a new (part) file, select the plane you want and paste in the sketch.

About the number of faces, when a differential manifold (a plane is one of those amazing objects), 2 first links for your culture

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Differentiable_manifold

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Differential_topology

And yes, for sure that this kind of tip is very useful, when the file has already some constructions before

Otherwise, if this kind of link gives you head aches, you can try to write on an usual sheet, redo the same on a Moebius strip and compare the 2 results.

(try to drw 2D frames, just for the fun)

@ Glenn....

yes, tx for the idea. Great.

And when the sketch has 50 or 100 items and relations, what is the other tip to be happy ?

Hey, if this stuff was easy anybody could do it.

SW does a very poor job of allowing users to control front and back sides of planes.  This has been an issue in the past.

One way is to change the way the plane is defined.  Start with a 3D sketch that has a line that defines the plane normal and has an endpoint at the desired plane location.  Define a plane using the line endpoint and the line segment as references.  To turn the plane around, edit the sketch and rotate the line about the defining endpoint 180 degrees.

In my native language, we talk about tail and head, when this kind of SW's way to solve a problem.

In english, I think that the matter is about cock and bull

From the same SW's gold mine : about a line, tangent with something ...... Yes, a line can be walked round with 2 directions (the smiley is named happy, but I am totally not, yet)

I had a similar problem, so I inserted another plane and rotated the plane 180 degrees.

• ###### Re: 2D sketch and one plane : how to win the jackpot with tail and head ?

You can use the Modify Sketch command.

Here is video of my solution mentioned above.

I think I have a simple solution. Give me a minute to create a video. It is easier than explaining it.

• ###### Re: 2D sketch and one plane : how to win the jackpot with tail and head ?

Tx a lot to take pains to give a solution.

Your solution, using cut surfaces to get a generic volume

was excellent.

SW is not bad, but really boring sometimes.

Here an error I detected too, from the same gold mine of this head and tail problem :

Btw, if i didn't add a controlling helix, in the javelin test5 problem/solution,

the scalloping effect on the boss dubbed stroke was disastrous.

Sorry Philippe, wait 10 more minutes. I am using this case for a tech tip. Will post shortly.

It's better than it use to be. You can now flip even if the sketch is completely located with respect to orgin.

• ###### Re: 2D sketch and one plane : how to win the jackpot with tail and head ?

Wayne,

Thanks for pointing this out. What a relief! When did this get changed? In other words, how long have I been wasting my time doing it the hard way, not knowing there was an easier way?

Tx a lot for your solutions.

But it's amazing that SW don't offer the option "Flip the sketch", since it's SW which choosing the orientation, this kind of situation should happen very often.

Btw, it's also very strange that SW don't offer some local frame, which is a basic concept in geometry.

Hi Philippe. Just an observation, Wayne is the one with the correct solution for this question.
