Can someone help me with importing files? I have an stl file and an igs file, both of which crashed my computer. I tried to import & export to & from Rhino3d too, but nothing good come out.
Solidworks can import an STL file as a solid only if it has 20,000 faces or less. It can import it as a graphics body only if it has 100,000 faces or less.
20,000 faces is not very many, and only very simple models can be imported. If the IGES file is 700MB, the STL probably has tens of millions of faces.
Are they currupted?
If not you could post them to the thread.
How big is the IGES file (in megabytes?). How much RAM does your computer have?
The .stl file will require remodeling in Rhino before it can be imported into SolidWorks. It is mesh data (just datapoints), while SolidWorks uses only NURBS (geometrically defined surfaces).
The file is 700Mb, and I have 4GB of RAM.
Are you running a x32 or x64 system?
If x32, are you using the /3GB switch?
If x32 and /3GB switch is enabled, you may need to upgrade to an x64 system with more RAM.
im running on x64.
Kim you need more RAM buddy. 4gb is nothing for 700 mb file.
SW is able to import STL files if the correct option is selected.
On top of that, I believe Solidworks (excluding ScanTo3D) simply puts a planar patch where every triangle was on the .stl model.
The results you will get out of that are very modest at best.
Is this one part file or is it an assembly Iges/stl? if it is have them send you the part files individually.
but if it is crashing rhino also sounds like the file has issues. What is the parent system that created the files, maybe an export problem from their system.
