hi all,
is it possible to sort the parts and sub assemblies in the design dree of an assembly?
i have a moderate sized assembly with a lot of repeated parts and the part instances are scattered through out the assembly tree. i would like to group the "like" parts so that it is displayed more clearly within the tree so that i can pick the parts easier without searching through the tree or using the filter.

Hi Justin, you can create folders by right clicking in the feature manageer and selecting "New Folder"...then you can just dump things into the folder...this should fix your grouping "problem".

You cannot sort them in one go. However you can rearrange them mannually.
For that Hold the Alt key and drag the part/sub-assembly to be rearranged.

I don't hold down the Alt key. I just click and drag.

This way you risk dropping whatever you're moving into a sub assembly...holding the Alt down, assures you're just rearranging it.

I do not know of a way. You can drag components around in the tree, but only to the point that it doesn't
interfere with the parent/child relationships. You can also create folder by RCing on a component and
selecting "Create Folder" then dump the parts in it that you want. Again it wont allow if it messes with the parent/child
relations. Hope this helps.
Try turning on Assembly visualization (tools menu)
That will display your tree sorted by name or another part propery. instances are grouped together. When you click on a group it selects all of the members. The report runs transparently, so you can perform most assembly operations while it's displayed.
This isn't quite the same alphabetizing the assembly tree-which would hose your BOM order-but it might add enough utility for you to get done what you're trying to do.
This is an old thread, but I came across it a few months ago. Recently I found a Macro at 3DConnectCentral that will sort your Assembly in alpha-numeric order.

AFAIK, there is not a way to sort alphabetically, unless there's a new macro that actually works-- it a shame, shame, shame
also try this setting:
it's right click on top level assmbly and then bottom item 'group component instances'
I don't know of any way to sort the tree alphabetically in one click and I would probably turn that feature off on our machines. I prefer to set the order of the stuff to an order that I choose for logical reasons and you can also do that. But it's a manual operation and I think you were looking for an auto method.
But, you could use the filter at the top. As you type letters into that box, it will filter the tree to those items. It wil also optionally filter the graphics area.
If you decide to rearrange the tree manually, you could filter for the like items and then easily select all at that point and put like parts in folders.
