I got my hands on the source code for the sample code in S-053209.  It worked great however I duplicated the project completely and ran into an issue.

Upon duplicating the code i renamed all variables, classes, etc. Anything i can rename to make it unique. Build the solution and added the add-in into my PDM sandbox. It also worked well however the code has a "settings" form that pops up to choose serial
