My screen shows a lot communities that I never signed up for and have absolutely no interest in. The way I find to unfollow these is to individually click on them and then go find the Unfollow choice and then confirm it. The other way shown to me is just as awkward.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could go into My Profile and have a selection for Communities and be able to check/uncheck the ones we want to follow?
It is currently a lot more cumbersome than necessary. I would hope the list could be easily displayed in My Profile with a simple check box so we can go click, click, click and change the Follow state of all of them at once. I'd even like an Uncheck/Check-All option and then let me change the state of the few. That would be fast and easy for the users. This type of selection is readily available in other systems so it is not new and apparently is not difficult to implement. Yes, I'm lobbying to have this go to R&D and for them to put an intern on it.
And @Dave Laban had added this suggestion "Tangential thought - would it make more sense to have it so when a user creates their 3DSwym account, they are set to follow no communities, but presented with a "what subject are you interested in" type page where if they, for example, pick SolidWorks, they are added to the "SolidWorks User Forum" and "SolidWorks Connect" communities only?"
