So I am working with sheet metal and quite often have to create drawings for very similar parts. Sometimes they only differ in length. 
I want to minimize the time I spend creating drawings for such parts. 

The way I do it right now is creating a copy of both part and the drawing using 'save as a copy' and under a different name. And after editing the part I re-link it with this newly created copy of
