This month’s edition of SolidWorks Support News covers a few of the most common questions and issues handled by the support team over the past month, as well as recent updates to the SolidWorks Knowledge Base.

Top questions and Issues

1.  SolidWorks 2012 Beta Program Modeling  and Rendering Competitions.

There will be 5 rounds of modeling and rendering competitions held during the Beta Program this summer.  Competitions have already started on 6/27/11 and will continue through July and August for the duration of the Beta Program.  Participating in the competition is an excellent way to showcase your modeling and rendering skills.  Official Entry Rules and content information are available on the Beta Program site: http://www.solidworks.com/beta/special-competitions.htm.

2.   Why do shaded drawing views appear dark (or black) in SolidWorks 2011 SP4?

This is a known issue which has been identified in SolidWorks 2011 SP4. A hotfix has been made available for download.

To find out more or to access the hotfix, please go to S-055622.

3.  What are some best practices to manage memory to avoid having the SQL server process hosting Enterprise PDM databases from taking all available Operating System memory?

By default, SQL Server will dynamically use up memory based on available system resources. It is common to sometimes see the SQL Server process (SQLSERVR.EXE) take up all available memory. Once the memory is allocated, it is usually not released back unless the service is restarted. This behavior is normal with SQL server and does not indicate a memory leak. However, because the SQL server dynamically uses up memory, on some production SQL servers with lot of database activity this can lead to the server operating system itself or other processes becoming starved for memory, which in turn can cause instability and performance problems.

4. How do I control if SolidWorks releases GDI resources when closing a document window in SolidWorks 2011 SP4 and newer?

Beginning with SolidWorks 2011 Service Pack 4, SolidWorks will, by default, automatically release GDI resources when closing a part or sub-assembly graphics window.   In SolidWorks 2011 SP3, this was not the default, but users could optionally change it.  In previous versions, there was no option.

New Knowledge Base articles

1.  What does the "The docfile has been corrupted"error message mean when trying to save?

This error message indicates SolidWorks is having trouble saving the data to the storage device being used.

There can be multiple causes for this.  One known cause is attempting to save over the network to a NAS or SANS device while exceeding the disk space allowance.

To find out more, please go to S-055712

2. Is it possible to create a custom task add-in using the Enterprise PDM API that opens and processes files in SolidWorks, just like the out-of-the-box SolidWorks task to Convert and Print files does?

Yes, the SolidWorks API can be used to open and process files from within the custom task add-in code.

A task is essentially an Enterprise PDM API add-in that can be launched on a remote system (instead of the local system it is triggered from). The API allows users to create their own task add-ins that can do any API actions an add-in or stand alone application can do in Enterprise PDM. To find out more, please go to S-054080.

3. What port numbers should be open on a network license server in order to run SolidWorks?

There are two port numbers that should be opened on a SolidWorks network license server.

Port number 25734 is the inbound TCP/IP port number. The other port that should be opened is 25735 where the SolidNetWork License (SNL) server is set up with "There is a firewall in use on this server".  When this option is not selected the second port will be dynamically allocated to an unused port each time the SNL server service is started.

There are a couple of options on the right side of the search results that can be useful; people, places, and search other locations (new).

The search other locations option (lower right hand corner) will open a new window or tab (depending on your browser) and display the same search results from the online help (http://help.solidworks.com).
