The SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager performs a number of purposes;
- Identifies what software and version(s) are installed.
- Checks for updates to installed software.
- Identifies required system pre-requisites needed.
- Accelerate the download process.
- Support for downloading software only and off-hours.
- Identify the required items for a safe, manual download.
- and more...
Whether you choose not to use the automated process within the SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager or you have proxy or Internet connection issues, the only safe means to manually download and update SOLIDWORKS is using Installation Manager assisted manual downloads.
The SolidWorks Installation Manager will insure that system pre-requisites are installed and up-to-date. The SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager ensures you do not exclude required prerequisites that can impact a successful installation and program stability.

Using the Installation Manager is the only safe means to insure you have a valid installation.
never ever had the problem you speak of, thats the only way get my files.
do you turn off virus protection when you install?
Same Problem/Complaint here. After all the download problems we have had over the past year, we worked with our VAR to get the ISO images of the SP's. The installation manager and manual downloads option is garbage. Try to get the ISO images from you VAR. You will have alot less headaches.

I don't want to be a 'nay sayer' here, but method is just horrible. Individual download of each file? Its time consuming, problematic, and a royal pain. FAIL!
I had the same problem recently. My company uses a separate internet connection for downloading vs. web browsing/email/etc. The portal to that connection is 32bit.
CATI, our value added reseller, maintains a secure FTP site and will post full disc content for download at customer request. It's a pain, but until our IT department gets caught up enough to switch to an x64 download portal or SW gets wise and starts providing disks again or starts allowing the x32 download client to download x64 install files, that's the way we deal.
I say complain to both SW and your reseller. They make a lot of money off of you. They can afford $1 for a burnable dvd and $1 more for packaging and shipping. I'd say they make so much money off of you, they can afford that $2 for every single service pack update, not just version releases.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease (until it gets replaced)

Also, don't install features you don't use or have licensed. SP updates require you to update every installed module, whether or not you can use it. The "manual download" method is much easier if you only have to update the core module.
This is realy bad
I like to have control of what i download and wich files.
Please, go back to how it was before.
Please.
I can't install any Service packs after SP4 on SW2009, keep getting the message that I do not have a licence (we have at least 15), Since I work for a Large US Corporation support is non existent for us here in the UK.
Does anyone here know how I can get the service packs to load?
Local Solidworks retailers are unhelpful as we didn't purchase our software from them.
1) Please always provide complete DVD as one .iso file for download.
2) All updates should be cumulative.

Glad to read I am not an idiot and that this process is much more painful than I would have thought!
gheezzz I just want an update for goodness sakes!
It would be nice to have some answers to this, seems these posts are being ignored.
My experience with Dassault Systems over the last 10 years is that they always ignore their customers and don't really care about customer support after the sale. One reason why I am considering using ProE/Wildfire...........
I may have said some less than stellar things about Dassault, but here in the midwest, I've got some scathing things to say about PTC, the company who owns ProE. I won't go too deep, but as a PTC/MathCAD customer, it took over 4 weeks just to figure out who we were supposed to talk to about buying more MathCAD licenses. If they won't talk to existing customers when the wallet is out, who gets the good service? I don't know much about ProE, but if you switch for customer service, I don't think you'll find the improvement you're looking for.
Hi,
I am also looking for an answer to have a better way of download & installation process for such a huge sized software which is around 9 Gigabytes... which takes aprox 8hr to download and install.... very very painfull process
if any one here can help / share the best pratice that you use to ease this long process, it would be of great help
Thanks in advance
five days and no download!
This has been a known issue and it is because of some glitch by IE. Check SolidWorks Knowledge base for solution offered.
I highly recommend to stay with SolidWorks since i changed the job and now working with Pro_e Wildfire 4 and I am experiencing far worse customer support from PTC.
I assure you that SolidWorks VAR is far more customer oriented than PTC.

I am in agreement with multiple users on this forum. I work for a company that has limited bandwidth, and for the amount of money spent to purchase the product for multiple seats of Solidworks a DVD ISO image that can be obtained through the portal should be offered, or automatically sending the media by mail should be done. From the IT Administrator's point of few, the entire download and install process is painful and needs to be revamped.
1) Please always provide complete DVD as one .iso file for download.
2) All updates should be cumulative.
No problems at all, just download and run the installer, and select create an administrative deployment. There you can select 32bits or 64bits or both. It just takes hours to create them
I still am experiencing problems with the installer crashing or does not run at all. Many large companies are NOT going to open the ports for fear of Hackers (our company just upgraded its security and now I cannot even get the installer to run). I could download the images at home (with my portal login of course) very easily with my U-verse connection but the fact I have sit there for a couple hours and pick each and every file is COMPLETE BULL$%^T!
I HAVE PUT MY VAR ON NOTICE THAT UNLESS I START GETTING SOME SATISFACTION FROM SOLIDWORKS, OUR CONTRACT WILL NOT BE RENEWED.
ARE YOU LISTENING SOLIDWORKS????????????????
We can't put 10# into a 5# sack, BUT we at least should be able to select a product, click a "ship me a CD/DVD" button and get it overnight (like I can do with Pro/Engineer).
Calling the Var - just adding overhead to the process...
has your company thought about making an admin image ... then you can vpn into the company server and fire that.
Problem is, you can't make an image if you can't get the software downloaded in the first place..
