Is there a listing of what is/was included in the various toolboxes for various annual versions (2006, 2007, 2008) of SolidWorks.

Is there a site or link that someone has that has a good tutorial on how the toolbox works? For example...when I go to <...\Toolbox\Browser\pem metric\Nuts and Fasteners\Type and Material> the folder is empty yet when I browse to it in SW it's full of parts. This appears to be the only PEM Metric folder behaving this way. Likewise my ANSI folders have all the Bolts and Screws lumped into on folder but yet in SW they are separated out into sub-folders based on type. I'm fairly confused on how it all works.

-Jody

Ok guys,

We have been having issue in the past when population our design library with assembly....

What we are doing at the moment is open the said assembly and drag and drop the assembly and every parts under it into a folder named relating to the machine number.

I still havent found how to drag and drop the whole assembly into it at once through the user interface. Is it possible? I guess the only option is to do it through windows?

Regards,
Sébastien

My company uses a 5/8" UNISTRUT. This size is not in the basic toolbox installation. Does anyone know how I can creat a new configuration for this size so that I can it in my assembly's?

I did find a configure... option under the Toolbox pull down menu but am unsure of how to use this feature. Is this where I go to create new sizes for UNISTRUT? If someone knows of a tutorial on how to use it please let me know.

Thank you.

Whether/How to Migrate/Upgrade Toolbox from 2006 to 2008

My company is currently upgrading from SW 2006 to SW 2008. We have a shared toolbox on a network driver. During previous upgrades, we have upgraded the shared toolbox through one of the upgrade installs on one of the workstations. This process seems to involve updating the toolbox database, but I don't think it does anything to the toolbox parts themselves.

Now that we are moving from 2006 to 2008, the question has been raised whether we should start with a fresh toolbox. Or if there are other migration/upgrade paths.

If we start with a new toolbox, we get all new parts and they don't have to be upgraded and resaved when opened. However, we would obviously lose the existing configs on all the toolbox and any of our data in the database (like part numbers for different hardware sizes).

If we use the install routine to upgrade the existing toolbox, then everything works the way it normally has. We just have to upgrade each parts when it is opened.

Are there other options (combination of above)? Are we missing out on newer features because of our very old tool box? Any suggestions on the situation in general? The toolbox and toolbox upgrades have always been a bit of a mystery.

Thanks in advance,
Torrey Bievenour
Director of Engineering
Vision Quest Lighting, Inc.

I have copied the standard ANSI Inch library and given it a name unique to our company. I then went through and disabled all of the items that I do not what our users to have access too.

For now Toolbox will only be used for Bolts, Washers, Lock Washers, Nuts. One step at a time.

After disabling all the bearings and what not, I have disabled all the sizes, lengths, thread displays that we will not need. Also on the Properties Tab I added the custom properties we need for each configuration.

Before editing anything else I stopped and tested this so far. For now, only "Hex Bolt" shows up in the Design Library, under Toolbox. This works exactly as I set it up. I drug a bolt into an assembly, and all off the custom properties I added show up in the Property Manager, along with others I don't want. But, so far so good.

So, now I return to the Toolbox Configure Data dialog. I go to the "All Configurations" tab and wonder where my custom properties are? Anyone? Anyone? I would have thought they would show up as columns in the table. I hope I'm doing something wrong. Is the only way to populate these new fields at the time the configuration is actually inserted into model?

More testing. If when I insert a Toolbox fastener into an assembly, and I fill in the custom properties I created, the parts work just fine with my BOM. But! Do I really have to rely on our users to populate this information accurately? Seems like using Excels functionality to automatically populate these fields would be a far better idea.

However regardless of how I try exporting to Excel, adding columns (for my custom properties), adding information to the table, and reimporting, I cant populate any of our unique custom properties. Other then at the time I insert something into an assembly

A little more back round. We use a unique part number and description for everything. Fasteners included. Our BOM's are populated with the custom properties "Part" for part number and "Description" for description. These fields, among others, are present in our part and assembly files. And I see no reason that Toolbox files should be any different.

By the way, this is so easy to do from the Design Library with a fastener I create. I'm just trying to understand Toolbox, and what benefit we can get from it.

- Mike

When you "Create Part..." from a Toolbox standard that came with the software you get the options of changing length and the file name in the Feature Manager.
I have created my own custom structural shapes (flat) and would like this option instead of having to "Save As" or rename the parts after they are created.

We assign our raw material parts numbers and descriptions. So when a user creates a part, whether it is a machined part or a cut to length part this data already exsists; they do not have to waste time filling the Material Number or Material Description properties out. This information is called out on all drawings for manufacturing reference.

How can I create these properties in the "Structural Members" parts located in Toolbox so that when our users right click on the icons and select "Create Part..." that data is already populated?

Thank you,
Tom
SW 08 sp3.1
PDMWE 08 sp3.1

We are having great trouble with our toolbox changing sizes on our fasteners. About half the time when we check a model out of the vault the fasteners and other toolbox components are the wrong size. We sometimes get a message that the configuration could not be found and would we like the program to create it. These configurations were already created.

We are using PDM Works on a server with a shared toolbox. We just changed over to not allow check in of toolbox items, though we were not checking in bolts. We are using the sprockets and gears from SW and now strip the toolbox ID from them and make them a normal part.

This problem is getting frustrating.

We are also experiencing a long wait on placing toolbox items, namely fasteners.

SW 2008 SP 4.0 x64 all machines are Window XP64, and the server is Windows Server 2003, we are using roaming profiles.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
