Is there a way to rename a part, it's drawing AND update the name in the design tree of it's assembly all in one step?

It seems like the only way to do this is rename in SWE the part and drawing and then rename it in the assembly. Seems way too time consuming.

Any help is appreciated!

Hi,
I thought perhaps my problem may have been related to another topic which states SW Explorer won't run and to that end, I updated my .NET 3 stuff. My error is not quite the same though - when I go into the options and change my search path, the error pops up when I try to apply the new search paths.

Please, if you've fixed the problem, would you help. Without the explorer we cannot do a where used on non-vaulted parts - and that's asking for trouble.

Thanks

Hi all,

I've a quick question. In our project template folders at work we have a drawings folder which is divided up into part models (divided into tooling parts and parts by manufacturers), assembly models and detailed drawings (customer supplied, tooling parts etc). As we're working on a project we design up parts and assign them part numbers but some of them become obsolete, i.e. they're not used or they are revised.

I want to be able to move the obsolete/redundant parts into another folder (named obsolete or redundant) but I want to maintain assembly references. I've noticed so far that this doesn't work with cut and past. For exmple if I have an assembly named A606-A001 and I rev this up to A606-A001R01 and then cut and paste the A606-A001 into the redundant folder and then maye open a detailed drawing of it, it can't find it. I just want to e able to maintain references.

Do I need PDM for this or can it be done on Solidworks or Solidworks Explorer?

God bless,

Phil.

[There are lots of postings here on the renaming problems in SW Explorer 2008, hopefully this issue hasn't been addressed too many times.]

Prior to moving files into PDMWW I tried to organize a very flat structure in SolidWorks into multiple subdirectories. Assemblies and parts were copied into the folders (making sure the local references of subassembly and its parts are ok). I then replaced the original "flat" assembly file in SWEx, so instead of looking in the "flat" directory it looks in the "subdirectory." At this point replace correctly identifies the where used parent assembly information .

Now after the replace is executed, the subassembly does not have the where used information, it is blank. In addition, the original flat assembly is now also blank. The parent assembly correctly seems to point to the new subassembly though.

That's almost good. However, if I now want to check that all the parent assemblies (there are multiples) are updated correctly, I do need the where used information in new subassembly so that I can identify those parents.

Is there any way (or a best way) to reestablish this information in the subassembly?

Thank You,
Mike

SW2008 SP3.1

I created a master assembly With Bottom Up approach with only the holes are created in Context of the assembly. Then I copied the master Assembly with all the drawings for the parts to another folder and then I use SW Explorer to rename the files in the new folder to create another Size from the same assembly. While renaming the files In SW Explorer I realized that in the "update where used list", it lists all the other Assemblies where this part were used. My question is how to break the link between the part and the assemblies it was used in. and If it couldn't I wan to know does that affect the original copy of the part in the other assemblies or not?
I wish that I Explained my point well
Thanks In advance

When opening an assembly in SW Explorer, the full path for files doesn't show anything. So I can't tell what directory files are being referenced from. Any solutions out there? I really don't want to add every sub-directory to the File locations list. I figured it would only need the base directories and show me the sub's. The list is in red text.
