I opened, in SW 2009, a collection of metal parts that have stock metal appearances. With all setings being equal, the 2009 satin parts have extra 'bounces' when rendered. It's almost as if they are permanently stuck on 5 bounces.

See attached image...

Is this a bug? I'm not sure if I agree with this change.

I'm a new user to both Solidworks and Photoworks and am completely stumped as to why I'm receiving the artifacts below in my renders.

The scene in particular is lit with an HDRI alone, but I've tried various other lighting configurations only to see the same "marbling" show up.

Indirect illumination is enabled and set to "High", though I've set it along with anti-aliasing to their respective highest settings and found only the slightest improvement in the artifacts. Ray tracing's been adjusted, as have shadows, as have the materials applied, as well as the Document Properties in the Assembly itself, all to no avail.

I'm officially out of tricks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

[Apologies for the "incompleteness" of the image...has to do with NDA stuff for the project I'm working on...hope it's readable]

Moving Lights Parametrically

I don't know if this is a "PhotoWorks" or a "General" question. Can you set up lights in SolidWorks to not be at a fixed position but to move automatically?

I am using PhotoWorks in SW2007 for a shadow study of a moving assembly. I need to determine where the limits of the "single point light" shadow fall on the floor as the assembly moves. I cannot figure out how I can have the light move with the assembly. Consider a swing arm lamp with a bulb in the head. As the lamp moves about, the shadow changes.

My work around is to create a 3d point in the assembly for the position of the light, set an angle mate, drive the mate (which moves the point), get XYZ dimensions of point, enter dimensions to light position, then render. Drive the mate again, remeasure XYZ point, reenter dimensions, then render. Repeat through all your angles. (Determining the position of the eventual shadow is another workaround ...)

Unlike the lamp, my light goes through just a circular arc. It would be nice to have an overall parameter (say "angle" defined in an equation). You change "angle" and that moves the assembly and also determines the position of the light.

Is there any way to enter anything except a dimension into the "Light Position?" Can this be handled with a macro or some other technique to make this somewhat easier? I have to go through several defined angles and a few positions for the light source, and doing all these steps prior to the render is cumbersome and error prone.

Thank You for any Pointers,
Mike

Michael Hess, CSWP
SW2007 sp5.0
SW2008 sp3.1

Right on schedule the images for the August PhotoWorks Rendering Contest have been posted for voting. We have good interest this month with 13 entries looking for the most votes. What can you do with a plastic pump bottle? Check out the submissions to find out and vote while you're there.

Before you leave download the model for the September contest and get started on your images. The September contest will have a bit of a twist. In the past you had to use PhotoWorks to create your image. For September you'll have the option to use either PhotoWorks or PhotoView 360.
Good luck.

www.robrodriguezblog.com

Rendering to a file creates black unrendered areas

I'm new to posting on the forums. Long time reader, first time poster, but this is the first time I haven't been able to find an answer to a question after searching the forums or the help files. Anyways... Here is the problem I am having.

I am having some issues with the render to file option in photoworks. Sometimes (but not all the time), large chunks of the resulting image after rendering to a file show up as black blocks. It seems as if photoworks quit rendering before the file was finished. And the last time I did this, almost the entire picture was a black block. Usually I can close and reopen the file and it will let me do at least one render to file before it starts screwing up again. Has anybody seen this issue? It is getting rather annoying.

On a side note, does anyone know how solidworks picks the render window orientation when rendering to file? You would think that it would center what you seen in model space on your monitor in the render window, but that is never the case. And half the time a shadow or part of the model is outside the render window and I only see this after I complete the render. Is there a way to preview the render to file window or something before spending a long time going through a high quality render?

Thanks for everyone's help on this!

I have been sorting out all the settings i need for a model in photoworks and then rendering it, happy with the outcome but because the model is totally in brushed stainless i had to turn all the spot lights right down to 0.01 to stop glare. This was fine in the rendered image but now my model outside of photoworks is very dark. How can i stop this and make it brighter again without altering my lights?

I do not have a realview compatible graphics card on this machine but have on the other CAD unit which is running 2008.

Find atttached the rendered image and the normal model.

Can anyone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I've got a domed surface which is an orange LED lamp. Under Appearances, I chose "Amber LED" for this feature. Under Illumination, I made it a light source. As you can see in the attached picture, it is emitting orange light, but the domed surface itself is quite dark. Anybody have pointers for how to make this thing light up?

Thanks in advance!

Hi All,

I'm doing some rendering in SW2008 SP4 and I need help setting the scene. I dont have RealView as I'm working on a laptop - so that may not help.

Basically, I want to super-impose my assembly on a JPG background. I've set the photoworks background to be my image, but how can I preview this to get the angle etc correct?

If I set my SW veiwport background to the image then this sort of works, except that the image isn't the same size as my screen so it distorts. If I set the photoworks background to 'tiled' image it doesn't distort but I can't set the viewing angle without some magic.

Finally, I'd really like to use a camera view, but I've found that when I'm setting the camera it distorts the background image so it make's it nearly impossible to set up the viewing angle!

Any help much appreciated!
Lee
