This is somewhat related to my previous post about memory issues.

I currently have a fairly small assembly open - SW is consuming 72,496K of memory.

EVERYTIME I FILE-OPEN ( or FILE SAVE, SAVE AS, NEW FILE...ETC ) SW causes the entire system to hang for 15-20 seconds.....watching the memory usage in the task manager, as soon as the "hang" releases the system, the memory usage will drop to almost NOTHING, the hard drive will start thrashing, the system will SLOWLY start to respond, and the memory usage will SLOWLY start to build.

This is driving me NUTS!!!

A reboot will eliminate this problem for a short period of time...sometimes.

Can anyone confidently spec out a workstation that could make exploded views and solidworks animations of an assembly with 2500 to 3000 parts that have an average 30 features. The parts are a mix of sheet metal, machine parts and electronic components. I don't have a clue but I'm sure it's in the way deep end of the pool. Thanks.

I'm not exactly sure how to describe this problem..I'll give it a shot.

SW 2008 X64 SP 4.0
Windows XP Professional x64 V2003 SP 2
Dell Precision T7400
Intel Xeon
E5430 @ 2.66ghz
8gb ram
NVIDIA Quadro FX 4600

Assume a fresh reboot of the computer.

Also, while doing this, I have the Task Manager open, watching the memory and page file usage.

Start SW...open a large assembly - use quick view/selective open and choose only one or two assm withing this large assembly. The file opens fine. Then I might open another assemlby or two within the large assembly. Watching the page file and memory I notice more memory is being consumed and more "stuff" is being written to the page file. Open a couple more files within the top level and I see the same thing. Normal, I think. So I start closing or supressing these assemblies.....memory usage decreases as does the size of the page file. Normal again, I think.

Until....

I continue opening files and assemblies within this large top level assembly....and I hit a breaking point. At this "point" EVERYTHING gets dumped to the disk. Memory usage of SW may be 3,000,000k - 4,000,000k...and will dump to almost nothing. Available memory, which was quite low ( around 1Gb ) will jump to 7.5Gb...page file becomes HUGE and the hard drive grinds and thrashes non stop....but at this point the computer has come to a complete halt. If I wait it out, SW will once again respond....maybe after 10-15 minutes of drive grinding. SW memory usage will then begin to build back up to it's original amount.

But at this point, every action bounces off the hard drive.

Closing SW or SW files to reduce memory usage doesn't help. The physical memory seems to no longer be available even after restarting SW. I MUST reboot the machine. Even selecting FILE -OPEN results in the machine locking at this point.

This issues seems to have just started a few days ago. Yes, this file is large and cumbersom but there were no memory issues such as this previously. No significant changes or additions have been made.

Any opinions?

Hey got a question, is anybody out there running multiple instances of solidworks on the same computer? Does it use 2 licenses? Is there a severe performance degregation? Is it even legal? We want to be rebuilding big assemblies in one and work in the other instance. Sound like a good idea?

I am looking to upgrade my video card. I am running Windows XP, SW2008.

I currently have a ATI FireGL V3100 and am thinking it may be the source of my crashes.

My questions are, which of the ATI cards should I get that SW recommends? or should I be going with ATI at all? I hear mixed reviews on their cards.

Any help would be appreciated. I want to be absolutely sure that I have eliminated the video card as being the issue.

Hey all!
I'm pretty new to the forum (this being my first post and all), but we've been having this problem at work related to SW 2008 3.1. We've been using it with the 3.1 update for some time and haven't had any problems. Until now. None of the computers I've tried this on have had any hardware/software changes even before SW was installed.
This is totally random, but the crash gives no error of anykind and SW just disappears. I've seen it happen myself. Sometimes it's right after the program is opened, sometimes it's right when a part or assembly it opened, sometimes the file is fine for awhile, then just disappears after working on it for hours. Luckily the parts or assemblies don't end up corrupted (so far). I just wanted to throw this out to the community to see if anyone else is having the same problem.
One of the computer's has a Quadro on XP 32 SP2, one has a Fire GL XP 64 SP2 and another is on board graphics with XP 32 SP2. All 3 have 2 GB ram and most recent video drivers installed.
As I said, no hardware/software changes have been made and everything has been fine up to this point. It also happens randomly on different files, it's not a particular file that causes the disappearance. The only issue I can think of is if SW is trying to 'phone home' and it dead ends in our VPN connection and closes the program. I've tried restarting and not logging into the VPN and it still does it, but I just wanted to mention the VPN in case someone knows there's an issue with that.

Thanks,
Chip

I am just about ready to give up! I have a new 64 bit system and have nothing but problems when running SW. I try to open mutiple drawings and it crashes. I try to plot and it crashes. Then I try and it crashes!! The load times are unbelivably slow and all this is because we wanted better video cards and need to up grade machines to 64 bit.

Any out there that has the same problems and have you been able to fix them?

Now it is time for a new laptop!
I just got myself a sailboat, a old Formula 28 catamaran, and would like to get myself one "semi-portable" workstation, so that I can extend my weekends some and work aboard.
Lenovo seems to have one that might work ok, the ThinkPad W700.

Does someone here have it running 2008/2009?
