We have a Vista Business 32 Bit workstation with an Nvidia Quadro FX 3500 graphics card. We have the most recent certified garphics card driver from solidworks website.
Running Solidworks 2008 SP 4.0
The computer is a Pentium Quad Core running 4gb of Ram.
We have recently been rendering machinery in photoworks and have not been getting satisfactory results so we did a pack and go on an architectural gate model to our re-sellers Solidsolutions to see what they could do with it.
They sent back the files and a jpeg of what tthey had done. As all the settings were already set so all we needed to do was render the model using the camera angle supplied and hey presto it would look the same although it didn't. There was a slight amount of pixilation and the overall quality was much worse even with Anti-aliasing at very high.
We do get another problem with this card when trying to spin the models it sticks and only a section of the model still spins in the view window. Then after a few seconds it catches up.
Has anyone else experienced problems with this card or know of any solutions to our problem?
I'm baffling myself with a lot of info about OpenGl at the moment and not getting very far.
The other wierd thing is I have the home copy of 2008 on my laptop which is only a dual core AMD with an ATI X1250 and it renders and produces far better results in Photoworks than the work machine.

Find attached the two examples of the gate.

I am looking at 2 computers and I would like to get some more opinions before making a decision. Both will run Vista business 64.

Option 1:
Lenovo Thinkstation D10
(1) Xeon Quad Core E5420 2.50 GHz 1333FSB 12 MB L2 Cache
8gb ECC DDR2 PC2-5300 SDRAM
(2) 146gb SAS Hard Drive - 15000 rpm RAID 1
(1) Quadro FX 1700

Option 2:
XiŽ MTowertm PCIe Workstation
(1) IntelŽ CoreŽ2 Duo E8600 OverClocked Silent Water Cooling @+-4.00GHz- 45nm 1333FSB 6MB L2 Cache Dual-Core VT EM64T
4gb DDR2 800MHz PC2-6400
(2) 150GB 10000RPM SATA 150MB/s WD Raptor X NCQ 16MB Cache <9ms RAID 1
(1) Quadro FX 3700

We do not use photoworks or any rendering, but we will be using microsoft office simultaneously with Solidworks. In Solidworks, we do a lot of split and cavity features. Our assemblies average around 50-100 parts.

Thanks.

We are running 4 licenses of SW 2008 on 4 Mac Pros running Windows XP SP3 on bootcamp.

However, our shared SW files are stored on a Mac Pro running Mac OS 10.5 server. So to get technical the files are written to the server hard disk in UNIX format and the Mac OS has software that tricks the Windows XP clients to thinking the files are actually in NTFS format.

This has never been a reliable setup; as we often get read and write errors. But lately we've been loosing up to 2 days work as the server seems to be restoring an older file, with no explanation.

We are going to trial a NAS formatted to NTFS to store our files (please comment if this has know to be a problem).

But has any one out there had these problems and found a solution? As we've spent a lot of money and time on our hardware and it should work.

Other solutions include: Running Windows XP on the server under boot camp. (but then we loose all the benefits of the UNIX based server)

Regards, Euan.

I think this lends credibility to the DIRECTX argument over OpenGL that I have been a proponent of for a while here on these forums. SolidWorks - get working on DirectX support. I do not want to use expensive "workstation" graphics with subpar performance because you and the grapics card companies funnel us there and use us as your cash cow...

http://www.mcadforums.com/foru..._directx_evolution.pdf

Are you set on the AMD and ATI combination? Intel's Core 2 is the CPU of choice for SW and the upcoming Core i7 looks to maintain that. As far as the FireGL vrs. Quadro's, Nvidia had the reputation of having better drivers, though this years problems with defective chips have hurt them some and ATI seems to have improved their drivers.
