I am using solidworkd 2007. The software has the units setup in "millimeters". However, I want to work in "inches".
I have changed the units to inches and save my part and drawing. However, when I open a new part the software keeps the "millimeteres" instead.
How can I setup SW to keep the units in "inches" for the new parts and drawings all the time?.

Thanks.
Mario

I've been having a problem using the Compare Features on the Utilities menu. After selecting the parts to compare the features on, and selecting Compare, the utility runs, most times it will finish and report the differences between parts, but when trying to exit it crashes SW, sometimes crashes while it's running. My VAR suggested running the repair installation, but that doesn't seem to correct it either. Was wondering if others have been having problems when using 'Compare Features'

Car scale laser scanners - any low cost ones?

I've been playing with a free laser scanning program that works by the user simply setting up a web cam and then recording a video of the user waving a laser plane over the object. The laser has a simple line generator optic as used in laser levelers. It also calibrates itself against a special pattern background image.
http://www.david-laserscanner.com

The nature of the David laser scanner set-up makes it impractical for larger items. In my case, I am wanting to scan some machinery about the size of a small car.

I've seen plenty of other similar programs done by college students that don't use the targets, but rather depends on a known geometric relationship with the laser and camera. But, again they normally are used on a small scale. In my case, I don't have control of the environment, so lighting won't be ideal. So, I am uncertain the low-cost approach will work in this situation.

Anyone here ever try this type of work at the larger scales, perhaps in a factory environment?

Joe Dunfee

Hey all,
Can anyone help? I'm trying to work out the best method to design inflatable fabric tubes in SolidWorks, so that the individual panels can be flattened for manufacture. I've tried to do this using the sheet metal function, but was wondering if there was a more suitable add-in (possibly for the clothes/footwear industry)? So far we've been using the Rhino 3D package, but would prefer to model it within SolidWorks.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks
Will

Hi There,

I'm a support guy at a university in Australia and I've been handed the task of packaging the application for usage in our computer labs for the students here.
I've noticed that Solidworks 2008 - 2009 requires the "Office 2003 Add-in: Office Web Components" and that installs 2 other folders within the Microsoft Office folder in programs file.

I wanted to ask why does Solidworks require this add in and is their a way for me to get Solidworks working without the install of the add in.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to your replies.

Cheers,

Berry
